A Lesson in Edification at Purdue University: The Compliment Guys

Teresa Neumann : Sep 25, 2009  Marta W. Aldrich - American Profile

"These guys really brighten my day. Kindness goes a long way, and these guys go out of their way to show kindness to complete strangers."

(West Lafayette, Indiana)—Have you heard of The Compliment Guys yet? I began hearing about them several months ago and decided to introduce our readers to them because they are continuing to make news. And what is so newsworthy about these guys you ask? They simply hand out compliments to people on the street, and their words are making peoples' day.

The Compliment GuysTwo Purdue University students, Brett Westcott and Cameron Brown, have been plying the sidewalk in front of Wetherill Chemistry Bldg. faithfully for two hours every Wednesday afternoon for over a year—no matter the weather—with a sign that reads "Free Compliments," and that's exactly what they do.

Explains Westcott, "I just wanted to go out and do something nice for people."

Says Brown: "Everybody has something to compliment. Everybody has something good in them. It just takes a second to find it."

According to the American Profile report, Chemistry department chairman Paul Shepson is one of their biggest fans. "One thing I like is that their compliments are always tasteful," he says. "They never say anything crude. They are gentlemen, but not in a nerdy way. The world would be a better place if people routinely took the time to notice others around them and interact in a positive way. They've taught me to make eye contact, smile, be kind to others and show I care. They make me want to be a better person."
