Actress Nia Vardalos (Big Fat Greek Wedding) Promotes Awareness of "Free" Adoption

"I held my daughter in my arms and thanked God for bringing her to me." I have really enjoyed Nia Vardalos on the big screen, as a funny, personable and excellent actress. Her first Independent film, which she wrote and starred in—My Big Fat Greek Wedding—was wildly successful.
After wrestling with the issue of infertility, Vardalos looked into adopting but seemed to hit another dead end, until she met with workers at American Social Care. (Photo: FOXNews.com) They told her that there were currently 129,000 children in the US who are legally "free" for adoption. Vardalos pursued adoption through her state's Foster Family Agency, and in just months, she and her husband were parents of a little girl. "It's the best thing that's ever happened to me! She was three-years-old when she first walked in our door," she told FOX News. In a People.com story posted on Beliefnet, Nia talked about the day she and her husband had their newly adopted daughter blessed by their priest. "I held my daughter in my arms and thanked God for bringing her to me," she said. "If the standard route of creating a family had worked for me, I wouldn't have met this child. And I needed to know her. I needed to be her mother. And in that moment, I knew why it had all happened this way: So I could meet this little girl. She is, in every way, my daughter." In the FOX News interview, Nia added, "I don't have a book to promote, or a movie to promote, I'm just out here telling people that if you think adoption is not an option for you because… you might not have the income to do a private adoption, foster family care is free. "If you work with a Foster Family Agency (FFA), it's free. They will do a nationwide search and connect you with a child who is legally free [not one who will have to go back]." November is National Adoption Month, and on November 21st, according to Vardalos, at least 6,700 children's applications will be processed in one day. "Across the country and in each state, lawyers and judges will work for free [on that day] to process the children's adoptions," says Nia.
