This past Election Day saw another victory for traditional marriage, as voters in Maine made it clear they do not support same-gender marriage.
The results may have been a surprise to some considering the trend of the northeastern state. However, it should be noted that gay marriage, when put to a popular vote, has lost in every state. The only way same-gender marriage has been made legal has been through legislation or court rulings. Such has been the case in Iowa, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut, where it has been legalized.
In fact, Tuesday night's vote was actually a reversal of legislation earlier passed in Maine, which had made same-gender marriage legal. It was a law the people evidently did not want.
Frank Schubert, representing the fight for traditional marriage, remarked, "The institution of marriage has been preserved in Maine and across the nation."
