Celebrity Christian Drummer Zoro: From Suicidal Thoughts, Marital Challenges, Poverty and More, to Fulfilling Your Calling—BCN Exclusive Interview

Teresa Neumann : Sep 6, 2016  BCN Exclusive

"Please don't get the idea you need to be a wealthy or famous person to impact others. You don't have to leave your family or quit your job to work in the inner city, or jet off to Africa to be a missionary. All you have to do is be willing to make a difference by using what you have and demonstrating love in your own personal way." -Zoro

(Los Angeles, CA)—[BCN Exclusive] Known affectionately as the "Minister of Groove," Zoro is an internationally renowned musician, author and motivational speaker. He has played on some of the most famous stages with many of the world's greatest musical legends. Indeed, throughout his career, he has consistently been voted No. 1 R&B drummer. In addition to writing best-selling books on the art of drumming (they are listed in the Top 25 Drums Books Of All Time), Zoro is also the author of the highly acclaimed "The Big Gig: Big-Picture Thinking For Success."

Now, with his newly released book "Soar," Zoro takes his life-coaching skills to a new level, using his incredible insight and experience to inspire Christians to excel in their divine gifting. I encourage anyone who feels confused, stuck, trapped, anxious or even just curious about their calling—about their life's trajectory—to read this book. You'll find that you've gained a brother and lost your fear of failure. It's that good!

To give you a little taste of his new book, the following is an interview with Zoro about "Soar" :

BCN: Of your new book "Soar! 9 Proven Keys for Unlocking Your Limitless Potential," Ken Barun, Senior Vice-President of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association wrote, "Zoro has written a textbook for life that everyone should read." Indeed, "Soar" is so inspirational on so many levels, and it's application so practical, even Joe Watkins, a political analyst for MSNBC called it "a must read." If you could give one reason why someone should read your book, what would it be?

ZORO: The only reason to read my book is to be inspired, but in all honesty, who among us doesn't need to be inspired on a regular basis? Inspiration is like water in the sense that you can't drink today for a thirst you will acquire tomorrow. Just as our body needs water every day, so does our spirit need inspiration daily for the prospering of our purpose and the refreshment of our soul.

I'm on this planet for one reason and one reason only; to be an inspiration to people in every way I possibly can through the various forums of expression the Lord has granted me. My book Soar! is one major way in which I am fulfilling that mandate. Throughout its pages is pure inspiration that was birthed from spending time in God's presence.

It is the Lord Himself who ordained me to write this book to build His people and equip them with the tools needed to reach more of their potential in order to live the life they were intended to.

Because God created each of us with unlimited potential, we all have untapped potential we are not using. He created us for so much more than most of us are presently experiencing. Soar! will inspire you to climb higher, but more importantly, it will help you to understand the real reason why one should strive for excellence in the first place. God has a purpose for us soaring and we must discover that in order to develop the incentive to take flight.

BCN: The number of famous people—both Christian and non-Christian—that you've played music with and/or have met is astonishing. As a celebrity "insider" How would you direct our readers to specifically pray for those "A-list" celebrities who've attained success but have yet to develop an eternal relationship with Jesus?

ZORO: First pray for them to have an encounter with the Holy Spirit, and then a true representative of Jesus Christ who carries that spirit. The problem with a lot of celebrities, and the general public at large for that matter, is that they have rarely encountered the real genuine love of God from a Believer.

Sadly, what they often experience from many so-called Christians is judgment and a religious pious spirit of superiority. The key to winning souls is for the lost to experience authentic love from those of us that are Christ's representatives. Men and women would sooner believe in a God in Heaven if they could see more of Him in those who claim to know Him here on earth. (Photo Credit: Zoro the Drummer.com)

I am convinced if people could really experience genuine love, acceptance, encouragement and affirmation from us, they would be more likely to come to Christ. The Bible says that "God is love," and to be imitators of Him. We are most like Him when we are demonstrating love in real, practical and tangible ways that cannot be denied.

We are called to represent Jesus. That means to re-present Him. It is the Holy Spirit's job to convict, God's job to judge and our job to love. Jesus came for that which was lost, the unrighteous. He didn't come seeking the sinless because there aren't any.

Remember, it is the love of God that draws men to repentance and not His judgment. Once a person feels the love of God in a real, tangible and transforming way, then naturally their earnest desire to repent will follow.

I often tell non-believers that if they were to be in the presence of the living God for 5 seconds they would never want to leave it, they would never again run from that glorious light. They would only run to it!

When the Holy Spirit fully permeates our spirit, we will emanate His light, love and glory and that will draw others to us, which will in turn draw them to Him. We need not do anything except be a conduit to His light. His love is His light, and we have the privilege of being His love and light to all we encounter.

BCN: In your book, concerning Life Principle #4, you wrote: "You might be wondering how I went from the elementary auditorium to playing the biggest, most famous stages of the world. The answer is... I had a plan. I always had a plan." This plan was written out in precise detail—something you stress is very important to do. Can you give some guidelines for someone who may be a more "fluid pursuer" to help them walk fully in their calling without a written plan?

ZORO: Certainly not every accomplished person in this world had a written plan per se. Though studies do show we are more likely to achieve something notable if we have exercised the necessary discipline to develop a plan, which in turn gives structure and substance to our visions.

But regardless of whether or not you have a blueprint for your dream on paper, it is imperative that the dream is cemented within one's heart, mind and soul and that you are fixed on what you must do to attain that dream.

Everyone is wired differently, but the most important thing is to share your dreams, goals and plans with others. Bring it from your heart to your mouth because then you'll be forced to be accountable for what you said.

Anyone who reaches their full potential does not do so by accident. To do anything well, one is always dreaming, planning, devising, and strategizing in one way or another.

It's the nature of all worthy accomplishments to have plans implemented, whether written physically or etched in one's head and heart.

Even God has plans for the prospering of His people. This is clearly evident as stated in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares The Lord. "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and future"

God is the Master Planner and if we want to be more like our Heavenly Father, then we need to imitate His ways more, and planning is one of His methods for accomplishing things. We should dream, and dream big and never ever give up our daydreams. For they are what God put you on this earth to accomplish. They are but a gift from Him.

BCN: Though you're a self-confessed optimist, you had a profound revelation on the subject of suicide. You wrote: ‘The revelation God gave me was that nothing I could ever do would ever stop me from existing. Not even committing suicide would allow me to escape from existence because I am created being with an eternal spirit." This is so profound! So many people struggle with suicidal thoughts—is there more about that epiphany you could expound on?

ZORO: I don't believe there's a person on this planet who's reached the age of understanding that hasn't thought of coming suicide at one point or another. Especially when faced with an emotional, physical, financial, relational or mental challenges of some kind or some devastating catastrophic event.

At times like these we feel overwhelmed by life and naturally want to escape the pain, so it's easy to go to that dark place in our mind. Though most of us don't act on it because we eventually find hope somehow. (Photo via Twitter)

Honestly though, who of us hasn't felt sorry for ourselves when we were being bullied, ridiculed or insulted? During those times many of us have thought, "I'll really make them feel sorry for how they treated me by killing myself. That will show them!"

Even young kids ponder on such terrible thoughts from time to time, and sadly statistics show that many of them have acted on that. All the more reason we need to learn how to hand over our burdens to the Lord, for we were not intended to carry the load by ourselves.

We need to encourage each other to surrender what's bigger than us to the God who is bigger than us. Lest we forget the directive in Matthew 11:28, "Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest."

In life, there's really no way except through the battle. Suicide will only catapult one into eternity prematurely, but it won't stop you from existing because you are still an eternal spirit that will live on. The only question is where your spirit will reside throughout eternity? Will it forever dwell in Heaven or Hell?

I think a lot of people are confused and believe that by committing suicide they will no longer exist, and therefore the drama and pain will be gone forever. That certainly won't be true if one ends up in Hell.

The fact is, we will always exist and there is just no escaping from that. So what we need more than anything is God's grace to get us through those difficult times.

Remember, Jesus assured us in John 16:33 that we would have tough times when He exhorted, "In this life you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." This is why we need to strengthen our relationship with Jesus so when the hard times come we can lean on the Rock!

It is through our utter reliance on Him that we overcome the world, and when we do so, we give Him glory and show others how to overcome.

No one is exempt from the overwhelming challenges of life, and I am no exception. But despite how hard life can get at times, I'm just not willing to risk my eternal destination by throwing away the life God gave me.

Nor am I willing to forego the opportunity, honor and privilege of being a conduit of positivity to impact the world for my King. If there is something we need to encourage one another to develop more of, it is courage itself.

BCN: "Faith is the invisible currency of Heaven," you wrote. You also noted that spiritual "assets" come with one's relationship with God and that we should live our faith responsibly with "the goal of being overdrawn by the time you reach the end of your life." What an exhilarating challengeand I love that you clarify that challenge, honoring those who serve God on a level like: stay-at-home mothers, 9-5 employees, retirees, etc. You gave a very practical example in your book of how that's played outsuch as your wife's cooking. Do you have any other examples you could share?

ZORO: We are here for a limited time. In fact, life is a limited time offer, but it is an offer you can refuse. What pleases God more than anything is His children using what He gave them to make a difference.

We exercise our faith when we step out and just use what He gave us to make the world a little sweeter—school teachers do this every day, so do store clerks, fast food servers, auto mechanics, construction workers, computer technicians and the countless individuals who fill a need in society.

It's not as religious as it is practical. Each of us has some kind of platform or job, and we all carry something that is of benefit to others, and as you step out in faith and exercise that gift for the betterment of others, you honor the King.

Each and every effort, regardless of the size, is acknowledged by God. He's in the small things and He's in the big things, because in actuality He is in everything.

Just remember, our days are numbered, but our deeds are not. The final count is left up to us!
