"The United States Will Not be Lectured To": Nikki Haley Rebukes Anti-Israel U.N. Security Council After Trump Declares Jerusalem the CapitalThe United States no longer stands by when Israel is unfairly attacked in the United Nations. And the United States will not be lectured to by countries that lack any credibility when it comes to treating both Israelis and Palestinians fairly." -Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.
"The United States has credibility with both sides. Israel will never be, and should never be, bullied into an agreement by the United Nations, or by any collection of countries that have proven their disregard for Israel's security," Haley told the council in a session convened by eight of its 15 members. Haley said the U.N. has done "much more to damage the prospects for Middle East peace than to advance them." Striking a defiant tone, she added that "we will not be a party to that. The United States no longer stands by when Israel is unfairly attacked in the United Nations. And the United States will not be lectured to by countries that lack any credibility when it comes to treating both Israelis and Palestinians fairly." The U.S. position on Jerusalem has put it at odds with the four other permanent members of the Security Council—Russia, China, the U.K. and France—who have all condemned Trump's Jerusalem moves, saying they hurt peace prospects and risk an escalation in the conflict. "These decisions are unhelpful for the prospects for peace in the region," British Ambassador to the U.N. Matthew Rycroft said. Addressing the Security Council, Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon held up a replica of a 1st century coin signifying the special connection Jerusalem has for the Jewish people. "I have here a replica of an ancient coin found on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It is dated from the year 67 A.D. during the time of the second Jewish Temple. The words 'Jerusalem the Holy' are written on it. Only three years later, in the year 70 A.D., would our holy temple be destroyed and the Jewish people sent into exile for 2,000 years," Danon said. Danon concluded his remarks by reminding the council of the Jewish expression and prayer "next year in Jerusalem." "Seventy years ago, the Jewish people came home to Jerusalem," the ambassador said, calling on "all the nations of the world to join us this year in Jerusalem, the capital of the state of Israel."
