Courage amid Carnage: the Heroes that Rose out of the Boston Marathon Attack

Aimee Herd : Apr 17, 2013  ABC News.com

Reuters photo(Boston, MA)—Amid Monday's shock and sadness, and as is often the case in tragic situations, another storyline has emerged from numerous reports highlighting the bravery and heroism of those who rushed into the devastation to help. (Photo: Reuters)

Particularly noted by various media was the fact that after the blasts, while terrified people understandably ran from the carnage; there were many who immediately and courageously sprinted into the heart of the scene—not knowing if there would be another bomb—to assist the injured, and help in any way they could.

Among the first responders and police and medical personnel who were already present, were regular citizens, "men and women who rose to the occasion," according to the ABC News report.

"That's what Americans do in times of crisis; we come together and we help one another," said District Attorney Daniel Conley at a press conference.

One of those being hailed as a hero is Carlos Arredondo who had been in the VIP section passing out American flags when the bombs exploded right in front of them, according to the ABC News report.

Carlos sprang into action, stopping the bleeding of an injured bystander who lost both his legs in the blast, he "never left his side, holding his hand 'til help arrived."

Joe AndruzziInterestingly, Carlos had—back in 2004—almost lost his own life when he reacted to the news of his son, Lance Cpl. Alexander Arredondo, having been killed by a sniper in Iraq. Carlos was so distraught that he reportedly attempted to set fire to himself in a van. (Photo: Joe Andruzzi helps/ABC News)

Fast forward to Monday's tragedy and how Carlos just may have saved the life of the man he'd helped. Perhaps God spared Carlos for such a time as this.

And then there was former New England Patriot Joe Andruzzi, who was found helping as well, the image of him carrying an injured woman to safety is seen all over the internet.

These heroes' actions and stories of others can be viewed in the ABC News video at the link provided.
