Korean War POW "Father Kapaun" receives Medal of Honor Posthumously

Aimee Herd : Apr 15, 2013  News Staff – CBN News

"…an American soldier who didn't fire a gun, but who [carried] the mightiest weapon of all: the love for his brothers so powerful that he was willing to die so that they might live." –President Obama

Father KapaunOn Thursday, April 11th, the Medal of Honor was posthumously awarded to Army Chaplain Emil Kapaun for his "extraordinary heroism," according to a CBN News report.

During the Korean War, Kapaun was among the first US troops to hit the ground, his fellow soldiers remembering him as "Father Kapaun," who was a "shepherd in combat boots," and called a "blessing from God."

The chaplain reportedly chose to stay on even after evacuation was ordered, so he could take care of the injured men who remained.

As he awarded the Medal of Honor, Thursday, President Obama said of Kapaun, "In the chaos, dodging bullets and explosions, Father Kapaun raced between fox holes, out past the front lines and into no-man's land, dragging the wounded to safety."

According to the report, Kapaun was 35 when he died a POW.
