According to Mayor Randy Baxter, the offer has "snowballed," with the city's web site registering 1,200 hits since the offer was announced in early February.

Baxter said he's received numerous e-mails. "It's been from a wide range of people -- singles, couples, young families and retired people."

According to the UPI report, four lots on which two homes of at least 1,500 square feet could be built are available and Baxter said the tiny Iowa town could come up with more free land. "If we get more applications than we have lots, we will hold them for when other land becomes available," Baxter said.

Aside from excluding homes less than 1,500 square feet, the city also has reportedly banned mobile homes from being put on the free plots.
