The EPA announced the "new scientific study using cutting-edge methods to improve the agency's understanding of what pollutants may be present in drinking water" in a press release on September 9. The study will use "groundbreaking new research," going beyond traditional testing methods, to study pollutants in water.

Politico reports the study will include looking for traces of the abortion pill. It will gather water samples "from several locations in different metropolitan areas," testing those samples for more than 1,400 contaminants, including mifepristone and misoprostol, as well as other synthetic chemicals, drugs, and pesticides.

US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said:

"Americans have a right to know what is in the water they drink. For decades, I fought unsuccessfully to get EPA to conduct this kind of comprehensive testing. Thanks to (EPA) Administrator (Lee) Zeldin's courage and President Trump's bold MAHA agenda, we are finally getting it done. EPA is going to search for pharmaceuticals, PFAS, and other contaminants that have gone undetected—and give Americans the truth about what is in their water."

What We're Hearing:

News of the study was roundly praised by Students for Life of America (SFLA), which has lobbied to have the abortion pill's effect on drinking water studied further.

"While we are still working for mandated, on-going testing, this scientific study is an exciting first step," said SFLA President Kristan Hawkins, who continued:

"The loss of life from chemical abortion pills begins with babies killed in the womb and sometimes even extends to their mothers. Abusers and pill pushers, an emerging abortion cartel, love the quick sale of deadly pills, but the fallout may go even further as women trying to get pregnant and endangered species suffer from endocrine disruptors in our drinking water. This testing is vital to determine water safety."

But pro-abortion outlet Mother Jones had little difficulty gathering commentary from those in opposition to the move. It quoted Jessica Valenti from her "Abortion Every Day" Substack, where she claimed that "The cruelty really is the point here, not science or health." The outlet also reported:

After Republican lawmakers urged the EPA to take up the water study in June, Nathan Donley, the environmental health science director at the Center for Biological Diversity, told The 19th that, compared to other pharmaceuticals, mifepristone is taken as a one-time dose by a small portion of the population. "There are legitimate water quality threats that we need to attack and rectify in a regulatory manner," Donley said. "And then there are things that are out in left field that just distract people." 

However, SFLA Vice President of Media & Policy Kristi Hamrick noted that the study isn't a "distraction" at all, stating, "Mifepristone in the water, with its ability to block the fertility and reproduction of human beings and endangered species, is an issue that we deserve to know more about."
