Governor Rick Perry of Texas signed a bill yesterday (Sunday) that would require parental consent before a girl under the age of 18 would be able to obtain an abortion in that state. The measure also brings greater limitations on late-term abortions as it restricts doctors from performing an abortion on a woman who has carried the child more than 26 weeks, except in the case of severe brain damage in the baby, or jeopardy to the mother's life.

"For too long, a blind eye has been turned to the rights of our most vulnerable human beings -- that's the unborn in our society," said the Texas governor to a crowd of about 1,000 at Calvary Christian Academy, Sunday. That same afternoon, Perry also signed a resolution to amend the state's constitution banning same-gender marriages. "A nurturing home with a loving mother and loving father is the best way to guide our children down the proper path," Perry told the crowd. The measure must still be voted on in November, however.
