HHS Announces $281 Million to Expand Addiction and Mental Health Programs

IFA / The Epoch Times : Jul 9, 2026  Intercessors For America

While effective treatment, prevention, and law enforcement all have important roles to play, lasting recovery also requires restored lives, strengthened families, and transformed hearts. Let’s pray that these resources are used wisely, that those battling addiction encounter genuine hope and healing, and that faith-based ministries continue to play a vital role in helping individuals find freedom from substance abuse.

The Trump administration is investing hundreds of millions of dollars into addiction recovery, mental health care, and overdose prevention as part of its effort to address America's ongoing substance abuse crisis. The new funding, announced by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., supports President Donald Trump's Great American Recovery Initiative and seeks to strengthen treatment and recovery services in communities across the country.

From The Epoch Times:

Kennedy said in a statement that the money is being invested to "equip communities with the tools they need to save lives, restore families, and Make America Healthy Again."

SAMHSA said that the investments will advance President DonaldTrump's Great American Recovery Initiative by expanding access to a wide range of behavioral health services, including substance use disorder treatment, overdose prevention and response, mental health and suicide prevention, trauma-informed care, integrated care, recovery supports, first responder training, privacy education and workforce development.

"President Trump?s Great American Recovery Initiative is putting recovery into action," Kennedy said.

The $281 million will be distributed through 15 grant programs administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The largest grant—more than $68 million—will expand access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction. Additional funding will support school-based mental health initiatives, trauma care for children and young adults, first responder overdose training, suicide prevention efforts, integrated behavioral healthcare, recovery support networks, and alternatives to opioid-based pain management. The announcement comes as overdose deaths have begun to decline after years of record highs. At the same time, federal agencies continue working to combat emerging drug threats. Just days before the funding announcement, the Drug Enforcement Administration temporarily classified several highly concentrated synthetic substances related to 7-hydroxymitragynine as Schedule I controlled substances, citing their high potential for abuse and unpredictable effects. Officials described the action as another step in the administration's broader effort to confront the opioid epidemic and protect American families from dangerous synthetic drugs.

America's addiction crisis has devastated families, communities, and churches for decades, leaving millions searching for hope and healing. While effective treatment, prevention, and law enforcement all have important roles to play, lasting recovery also requires restored lives, strengthened families, and transformed hearts. Let's pray that these resources are used wisely, that those battling addiction encounter genuine hope and healing, and that faith-based ministries continue to play a vital role in helping individuals find freedom from substance abuse.
