Unclear Whether Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has Reversed their Decision to Defund Planned Parenthood[UPDATE: 2/3/12]?A recent update notes that the Susan G Komen Foundation may have reversed their decision regarding support for planned parenthood this week. According to sources it is still somewhat unclear what their final word will be. To read more about this latest development, CLICK HERE. EDITOR'S NOTE: Has Komen caved to the angry voices who barraged their foundation this week after its decision to no longer fund planned parenthood (PP)? According to several news sources, this remains to be seen. Komen announced today (2/3/12): "We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women?s lives. "The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not. "Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political." Pro-life sources are not yet sure how this will affect their prior decision not to fund PP because they do not provide mammograms to their patients, and also due to the ongoing investigation of PP. [Feb 2](Staten Island, NY)?Leaders of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign (SNMAC) today hailed the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation's announcement that it will no longer give money to Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, or any other organization under Congressional investigation.
"No one is more anxious to find a cure for breast cancer than the women of Silent No More," added Georgette Forney, also a co-founder of SNMAC. "This is a plague that affects us personally and deeply. We recently lost a dear co-worker to breast cancer; the disease is all too familiar to our membership. On behalf of the breast cancer victims and survivors of Silent No More, I can't thank the Susan G. Komen Foundation enough for this decision." The Silent No More Awareness Campaign and other pro-life women's groups have worked for years to disseminate the facts on the abortion/breast cancer link. Eve Sanchez Silver, a former Susan G. Komen medical research analyst and Hispanic outreach director, deserves special thanks for her tireless efforts to educate women, especially Latinas, on the breast cancer risk caused by abortion. Ms. Sanchez Silver, a two-time breast cancer survivor who left the Komen Foundation because of its donations to Planned Parenthood, appeared on Priests for Life's Defending Life television program as part of those efforts. Alveda King, fulltime Priests for Life associate and a spokeswoman for SNMAC, added today, "There are abortion clinics across the United States located on or near boulevards named after my uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They have been dealing death to babies and, according to objective scientific research, breast cancer to women for decades. The Susan G. Komen Foundation's new policy will save lives by making abortion, and therefore breast cancer, less prevalent in all communities." Since the launching of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign in 2003, 4,845 women and men have shared their testimonies publicly at over 865 gatherings in 48 states and ten countries where more than 110,830 attendees have heard the truth about abortion's negative aftereffects. More than 10,100 people representing 57 countries are registered to be Silent No More. Raising awareness about the hurtful aftermath of abortion and the help that is available to cope with the pain are two of the Campaign's goals. The Campaign has over 1,300 testimonies posted here, with over 120 that are shared via video! If you'd like to call or send a note of thanks to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, CLICK HERE.
