(Beverly Hills, CA)—Dr. Maurice Sklar was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to a Russian-Jewish family with a rich musical heritage. At age four—he is now 45 years old—he began playing the violin. He won numerous awards from the age of nine, and left home to study violin with Fredell Lack in Houston, Texas, when he was only thirteen. He attended Meadowmount Summer Music School, Ivan Galamian's Strings Camp, for seven consecutive years from the age of thirteen to nineteen.

Accepted at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City at the age of fifteen, Maurice subsequently won a scholarship to attend the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of sixteen, where he studied with the great violin teacher, Ivan Galamian. In 1984 he was accepted as a scholarship student with the renowned violin pedagogue, Dorothy DeLay. While attending the Aspen, Colorado Music Festival from 1984-1986, Miss DeLay invited Maurice to return to Juilliard and conclude his professional studies. From 1985-1989, he worked with her in preparation for a major solo career in classical music.

Dr. Maurice Sklar has appeared as soloist with many orchestras, including The Little Orchestra Society of New York at Lincoln Center, The Houston Symphony, The New Orleans Philharmonic, The Monmouth, New Jersey Symphony, The Curtis Symphony Orchestra, The University of Mexico City Orchestra, The Tulsa Philharmonic, The Galveston Symphony, The Richardson Symphony, The Bridgeton Symphony, The Baton Rouge Symphony, The Plymouth Symphony, The Memphis Symphony, The Hendersonville Symphony, and The Minneapolis Chamber Symphony. He has performed in concerts across the country and abroad.

Recently, Dr. Sklar played his heavenly music at a star-studded event at the 10th Annual Media Fellowship Praise Brunch, and then agreed to talk about his ministry of worship through his violin playing.

"I'm a Jewish Believer and I don't mind being called either a Christian or a Jewish Believer," he said. "The Lord asked me to honor the faith of my fathers. I have a Russian eastern European heritage on my mother and father's side.

"I believe that there's a highest purpose of music, and what's going on in Heaven is also to worship and glorify the Most High God. I believe that long after we're done with this short time on earth, we'll be worshiping Him forever."

Dr. Sklar went on to explain how he chose his selection for the Beverly Hills event including music from the soundtrack of Schindler's List and the old hymn, Holy, Holy, Holy.

"I always wait on the Lord and He tells me what He wants me to do... I played one selection from the Schindler's List movie and I really believe that God wants more Kingdom movies."

"I especially enjoy playing my version of Holy, Holy, Holy," he added. "It's very free and I also play classical music. The Lord called me and he said, 'Son, you can entertain people for an evening and that's ok, but if you go and minister and perform for Me, I'll do more than just entertain people for an evening; I will change lives forever.' Music has a way to get past the barriers and hearts and open them to what God wants for them."
