For weeks now, conservatives around the nation have called relentlessly for the passage of the SAVE Act. Now, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has finally announced that a vote on the legislation, which already passed the House, will likely take place next week.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Tuesday that he will schedule a vote on the SAVE America Act next week, which will likely fail if it requires the 60-vote threshold to pass.

"We're discussing the manner and process by which it comes to the floor, but it is the intention to have it up next week," Thune told the Washington Examiner. 

He declined to say whether that bill would require 60 votes to pass, as most Senate legislation does, but reiterated that not enough Senate Republicans support a talking filibuster for the bill to pass without the 60 votes.

If passed and signed, the SAVE Act would require both voter ID and proof of citizenship to register to vote. Republicans have claimed this bill is absolutely necessary to protect our elections and prevent voter fraud from occurring.

President Trump recently came out in strong support of the legislation, vowing not to sign any other bill until the SAVE Act is passed. Majority Leader Thune, meanwhile, recently clashed with the President, insisting that the legislation doesn't have enough votes to pass. While many conservatives have called for a talking filibuster that would remove the 60-vote requirement, the Majority Leader said he doesn't have enough support for that either.
