Fire Fighters Union Refuses to Endorse Harris: 'Best Way to Preserve and Strengthen Our Union'"Today, the IAFF Executive Board, by a margin of 1.2%, voted to not endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election..." -Statement by the IAFF
"Joe Biden is a lot like fire fighters, he is a problem solver who cares deeply about his country and is driven to make it better," IAFF's president said in 2019, announcing the union's endorsement of then-Vice President Joe Biden in his bid to become the next president of the United States in 2020. In a statement released Thursday, however, the union says it made the decision not to endorse a candidate after taking stock of the opinions of its members: "Over the past year, the IAFF took unprecedented steps to hear our members' views on the candidates and the policy issues that matter most to them." Promoting unity, not division, is the best way the union can represent the interests of all fire fighters, IAFF says: "The IAFF Executive Board determined that we are better able to advocate for our members and make progress on the issues that matter most to them if we, as a union, are standing shoulder-to-shoulder. This decision, which we took very seriously, is the best way to preserve and strengthen our union." Nonetheless, the statement encourages all fire fighters, as well as all eligible voters, to go to the polls and make their voices heard. Last month, the Teamsters Union announced that, for the first time in nearly thirty years, it would not endorse a candidate for president. "The General Executive Board of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters on Wednesday elected not to endorse any candidate for US President," the union announced, making 2024 the first time since 1996 that it did not endorse a Democrat, or any, presidential candidate. In two recent polls of its membership, the Teamsters Union found that its members favor Republican Donald Trump over Democrat Candidate Kamala Harris by more than 25 points.
