Hawaii Man Saves Abandoned Baby: 'Grateful to God'"I broke down a little bit and started crying because I didn't know how someone could just leave their kid like that..."
The Kahala resident, who wished to remain anonymous, heard a homeless woman giving birth outside his window in the Honolulu neighborhood. He immediately called 9-1-1, but was overcome with emotion when he saw her drop the baby in his trash bin. "I broke down a little bit and started crying because I didn't know how someone could just leave their kid like that," he told KHON 2 News. He said he was able to grab the innocent baby girl from top of the trash heap and didn't think the little one was injured. "It was crying when I took it out of the dumpster, which is a good sign," he said. "I'm grateful to God that I was here home when this all happened so that I was able to get the kid in time to save its life," the Good Samaritan said. "It could have turned out very different if I didn't hear the screams and I wasn't home." The baby is reportedly in stable condition and a child abandonment case has been opened as the mother has not been identified. "It's to save newborn babies from abandonment," Mizuno told KHON 2. "If that young girl knew about the law, she could've had the baby at the Queen's Medical Center, a hospital, and relinquished the baby right after birth and there would've been no criminal charges at all."
