Dr. Corinne: Using Essential Oils in Some Fantastic Fall Recipes for Good Health Inside and Out *Corrected*

Dr. Corinne Weaver : Oct 4, 2019  DrCorinneWeaver.com

Editor's Note: Some of the recipes shared in this article last week were incomplete, or cut-off, so we're re-running the entire article with the corrected, full recipes. -Aimee Herd, BCN

Last week I discussed seasonal eating and I started to create some fall creations with food and crafts. Do you use the Fall as your last chance to enjoy the great outdoors? I sure do!! (Image: Courtesy-Dr. Corinne Weaver)

I love hiking and today we are headed up to a trail that leads to a waterfall. My mom loved waterfalls and since she is no longer with me, I love to experience them and reflect on good memories. I also love using smells to remind me of good memories. Growing up with severe allergies I was not able to handle a lot of artificial smells, that's why I love essential oils.

Did you know that the brain's smell center, known as the olfactory bulb, is connected to the amygdala and hippocampus. These areas of the brain are deeply connected to the memory center. So, the smell of something can immediately trigger a detailed memory or intense emotion.

When it comes to Fall, I think of Clove, Ginger, Cinnamon Bark, Citrus fruits, and Cedarwood. My mom used to make Russian Tea in the fall. In fact, last fall I made a diffuser blend called just that and I will share with you below.

Fall is often known as a time of harvest, a time to gather together with friends and family, and a time to enjoy hearty food that will keep us warm, inside and out.

Essential oils like Cinnamon, Clove, Ginger, and Cinnamon are commonly used in essential oil recipes during autumn due to their spicy, warm scents and flavors. Herbaceous oils like Oregano, Rosemary, and Basil are also a popular choice when cooking rich or hearty meals.

Many people complain that the Fall often leads to a compromised immune system as the weather/seasons change, schedules begin to fill up with the holidays, and everyone tries to "fit in" their yearly goals all at once. If you're nodding your head, you MUST try mixing one drop of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint oils in a glass of filtered water every morning. The Lemon supports healthy respiratory function, while Lavender (when taken internally) can reduce anxious feelings and promote a peaceful sleep and Peppermint (when ingested) can promote healthy respiratory function and clear breathing.

If you're exhausted from layering yourself with globs of lotion and moisturizer just to have it wash off in a few minutes, you're not alone! In fact, Seasonal Affective Disorder (a very real problem) is only worsened with a seemingly endless bout of dry skin. However, just because it's the norm for some does not mean you need to give up... it's time to hydrate! Hydrating is important any time of the year, and that goes for your skin, too!

When was the last time you took a bath and used body scrubs that created an environment filled with sensuality and serenity? Self-care is extremely important to your overall health and wellness, but most store bought bath and beauty products are filled with ingredients that are less than ideal for your body.

Thus, DIY is the way to go to become fully aware of every ingredient while attaining the cost effective and health outcomes you desire.

Did you know that sugar scrubs are a great way to exfoliate and soften your skin and can easily be customized using different types of sugar, salt, oil, and essential oil?

This Fall Sugar Scrub is gentle on your skin and has a delicious spicy fall aroma.

INGREDIENTS:

- 3⁄4 cup cane sugar

- 1⁄2 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil

- 4 drops Orange oil

- 4 drops Clove oil

- 3 drops Ginger oil

Tip: You can use brown sugar or sea salt in place of white sugar and almond oil, grapeseed oil, or olive oil in place of Fractionated Coconut Oil.

INSTRUCTIONS:

- Combine sugar and Fractionated Coconut Oil in bowl.

- Add essential oils.

- Stir until the mixture is the consistency of a slushy. You may need to add more sugar or Fractionated Coconut Oil for desired consistency.

Looking for truly healthy looking skin? I highly recommend making this easy Ginger Lime/Lemon Brown Sugar Scrub to help exfoliate.

Use this scrub one to two times a week on hands, feet, legs, and/or arms. (You can also add your favorite essential oils and give this scrub as a gift!)

- 10 drops Lime or Lemon oil

- 5 drops Ginger oil

- To use, apply a small amount to hands and scrub for 30 seconds or until sugar dissolves. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Whether you're around the campfire popping fresh-popped corn from the farm or watching the stove work it's magic... I have a perfect popcorn topping you and your family are going to LOVE!

All you need for the topping is:

- 1⁄4 cup melted unrefined coconut oil

- 1⁄4 cup pure maple syrup

- 2–3 drops Cinnamon Bark oil

- Ground cinnamon to taste

- Salt to taste

To get the immune-boosting benefits of this tasty topping, stir in the coconut oil, maple syrup, and essential oils and toss around to mix evenly. Finish it off with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and salt to enjoy!

Due to a lot of requests to share HEALTHY recipes that still have a strong fall vibe, I made sure to include a popular favorite...

Granola bars are a crowd favorite, especially when they are easy to make and are delicious! You can play around with the oils and ingredients in this recipe, but here is what has been found to work best:

INGREDIENTS:

- 2 1⁄2 cups of gluten free quick oats

- 1⁄2 cup rice krispies

- 1⁄2 cup of mini semisweet chocolate chips (I get enjoy life brand)

- 1⁄4 cup brown sugar

- 1⁄2 teaspoon of salt

- 1⁄4 cup coconut

- 1⁄8 cup flax seed

- 1⁄8 cup sesame seed

- 1⁄8 cup chia seed

- 1⁄3 cup coconut oil

- 1⁄4 cup honey

- 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla

- 2 drops of Cinnamon Bark

- 1 drop of Orange

- 1 drop of Cardamom

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Preheat oven to 350° F.
  • Mix all of the dry ingredients together and set aside.
  • Mix all of the wet ingredients together, then melt in a saucepan over medium heat.
  1. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Mix evenly and allow the wet ingredients to absorb into dry ingredients. (If mixture is toodry, add more coconut oil or honey; if too wet, add more oatmeal.)

Now for the excitement... line the cake pan with parchment paper and pour in the mixture and pat down. Simply bake for 12–15 minutes (or until lightly brown), then let cool off before thoroughly enjoying!

Some substitute ingredients may include almonds, pine nuts, walnuts, dried cranberries, and pepitas, while other essential oils you may consider are Cassia, Tangerine, Clove, Kumquat, and even Clementine!

The perfect treat for fall, Cinnamon Apple Chips are sweet, crispy, and have a delicious hint of cinnamon! Pack them in your children's lunchboxes as a healthier alternative to potato chips. (Just beware—they are addicting and make your home smell amazing!)

INGREDIENTS:

- 8 medium sized apples

- 1 tbsp cane sugar or sweetener of choice

- 5 drops of Cinnamon essential oil

DIRECTIONS:

- Preheat oven to 225 degrees F.

- Combine sugar and Cinnamon essential oil in small bowl, stirring to combine.

- Slice apples into thin slices. (A mandoline slicer is best.)

- Place apples onto parchment paper covered baking sheet in single layer.

- Sprinkle apple slices with cinnamon essential oil sugar mixture.

- Place baking sheets in preheated oven for 45 minutes. Flip apples over halfway through.

- When the edges of apples are curled, take out of the oven and place on a wire rack until cooled and crispy.

This cake is phenomenal if you want to make your home smell like autumn, serve a vegan guest, or have a healthy (yet sweet) treat for breakfast! I will be making this for next weekend.

INGREDIENTS

- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose gluten free flour

- 2 1/2 tbsp baking powder

- 3/4 cup raw sugar

- 1/2 cup olive oil

- 1/2 cup orange juice

- 1/2 cup walnuts

- 2 small apples, grated

- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

- 1 drop Cinnamon Bark essential oil

DIRECTIONS:

- Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat your tin with olive oil.

- Juice orange in bowl and set aside.

- In a separate bowl, mix together flour, cinnamon, and baking powder. Set aside.

- Grate the apples. Set aside.

- In a different large bowl, add sugar, olive oil, and Cinnamon Bark essential oil. Mix together using a handheld or free-standing mixer.

- Add the flour mix and the orange juice to a bowl with sugar and oil alternatively and keep mixing. (It's okay if the mixture looks dry. The grated apples will provide additional moisture.)

- Add the apples and the walnuts and fold in gently with a spoon until just combined.

- Pour the mixture into a baking dish and bake for 45 minutes (or until a toothpick can be inserted and removed clean).

- Slice and enjoy!

If you're already using oils, I hope this article gives you some more ideas on how to use.

For those new to essential oils, there are three ways to begin using essential oils:

  1. Purchase oils at the full retail price (most expensive and not recommended).
  2. Pay a $45.00 membership fee and you can then purchase your oils at wholesale price (24% off retail) - TOTALLY AWESOME!
  3. Purchase an enrollment kit. (With the enrollment kit, YOUR MEMBERSHIP FEE IS WAIVED and your kit oils are below wholesale pricing!)

Once you decide how much of a discount you want, Click Here to purchase your oils or to become a wholesale member with Young Living.

Then, after her first upper cervical adjustment at age 21, her health began to improve thanks to upper cervical care and natural herbal remedies. This enabled her to create a drug-free wellness lifestyle for herself and her family, and she also enthusiastically discovered her calling to help children heal naturally.

Dr. Weaver was named one of Charlotte Magazine's "Top Doctors" in 2016 and is now a number-one internationally bestselling author to two books: Learning How to Breathe and No More Meds.

Upper Cervical Wellness Center is known for finding the root cause of health concerns through lifestyle changes, diagnostic testing, nutraceutical supplementation, and correction of subluxation (as opposed to just medicating the symptoms). The practice offers cutting-edge technological care at its state-of-the-art facility, including laser-aligned upper cervical X-rays, bioimpedance analysis (measures body composition), digital thermography (locates thermal abnormalities characterized by skin inflammation), and complete nutritional blood analysis, which is focused on disease prevention.
