UPDATE: Keep Praying, Colorado's Waldo Canyon Fire Now 15% Contained!Incident commander Rich Harvey told a Friday morning news briefing that crews fighting the Waldo Canyon Fire made "really good progress overnight." [UPDATE: 6/29/12-11am PT]?It appears the countless prayers over Colorado are being heard, and the strong efforts by firefighters are also working to contain the raging blaze of the Waldo Canyon Fire. Although the number of structures consumed rose to 346, fire authorities said on Friday morning that the crews who were fighting the fire overnight made significant progress, and that no additional structures were lost or damaged since the latest number. One person was killed. The Waldo Canyon Fire, which is one of 9 fires burning in the state, was said to be 15 percent contained on Friday. It has reportedly scorched 16,750 acres. Some neighborhoods have been allowed to return to their homes after being evacuated earlier this week. [UPDATE: 6/28/12-7:42 AM PT]?According to a DenverPost.com report Thursday morning, the Waldo Canyon fire consumed a Mountain Shadows neighborhood that lies inside Colorado Springs city limits, reducing 300 homes to "charred rubble." Firefighters had to battle the blaze spurred on by Wednesday's late-afternoon wind gusts of up to 20 mph, but it was no where near the "catastrophic event" that caused the fire to double in size on Tuesday. It helped that temperatures were cooler than the previous days, as well. As of Thursday morning, the Waldo Canyon wildfire was still only 5 percent contained, it is one of nine major wildfires currently burning in Colorado. [6/27/12] Over 32,000 have been evacuated.
Over 9,000 residents near the area are under mandatory evacuation, as some 32,000 residents overall have been affected by evacuation orders throughout the area. Rob Dyerberg, a fire information officer noted that the Waldo Canyon Fire had grown by "more than 12 ? square miles late Tuesday to 24 square miles." Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt is asking people to pray for rain over the area west of Colorado Springs, but not so much to cause flash flooding. We at BCN join with Chaplain Klingenschmitt in asking our readers to please pray for an end to these raging fires in Colorado. That the Lord God would send just enough rain?even today?as to quench the fires and stop them from advancing any further; for the wind to calm and no more lives or homes to be lost. "Peace be still" over Colorado, in JESUS' name.
