Fire in His Belly: Man Lost Two Days on Mt. Rainier Marched to "Amazing Grace"

His expeditions on the mountain take him "close to God."

(Tacoma, WA)—Nearly every weekend for the last decade, 66-year-old experienced outdoorsman Yong Chun Kim has gone snowshoeing in Washington's Cascade Mountains.

But, on Saturday, January 14, when Kim led a group of friends on a trek on Mount Rainier, he reportedly fell 150 yards down a steep slope in whiteout conditions and then fell again, ultimately getting buried over his head in snow.

Snowshoer KimAccording to a King 5 News report, Kim—armed with only the barest essentials—was able to make his way to a tree where he could take refuge.

Meanwhile, nearly 50 hours after the accident, Kim's family was said to have nearly lost all hope that he had survived or would be found. But not so, Kim.

Pictures Kim took of himself during his ordeal show a smiling, faith-filled face and, indeed, he was staying alive by marching in place while singing Gospel tunes in Korean... especially "Amazing Grace."

The report notes that Kim had a "song in his heart and a fire in his belly," that helped him survive and he has no intention of giving up his weekly expeditions on the mountain.

"It takes me close to God," he said.
