Secularist Reporter Sold on Dave Ramsey's "Grandma Plan"

by Teresa Neumann : Nov 17, 2009 : Megan McArdle - The Atlantic

"Ramsey has made a convert out of a secular journalist...I have never felt as serenely in control of my finances as I have during these months of knowing that every single dollar is where it is supposed to be: either in the bank, or on a well-chaperoned date with our envelope organizer. The process has been surprisingly painless but, even more surprisingly, pleasant."

REPORTER'S NOTE: Though the reporter below gives no indication she is interested in becoming a Christian, I believe people like Dave Ramsey plant seeds of faith in their ministry that may not be revealed for years. Also, the fact that Ramsey is sharing a method of economic health that benefits everyone, not just Christians, is itself a powerful witness to the love of Christ for all people. -Teresa Neumann, BCN.

Dave Ramsey(Detroit, Michigan)—Self-avowed secularist Megan McArdle, writing for The Atlantic Review, went to a Dave Ramsey seminar recently to see first-hand what is behind Ramsey's Total Money Makeover phenomenon.

After the seminar, in which Ramsey closed by saying, "I'm talking about this man named Jesus, and if you don't know him, you need to be introduced," McArdle said, "I think I just attended my first prayer meeting."

The long and short of it, however, was that McArdle decided to give Ramsey's economic principles—aka "Grandma's Plan"—a try. She was glad she did.

Said McArdle: "Ramsey has made a convert out of a secular journalist with one of the pricey M.B.A.s he likes to poke fun at. I have never felt as serenely in control of my finances as I have during these months of knowing that every single dollar is where it is supposed to be: either in the bank, or on a well-chaperoned date with our envelope organizer. The process has been surprisingly painless but, even more surprisingly, pleasant."
