Wounded Warriors Project Urges Passage of SB 1963 which Supports Severely Wounded Troops and their Caregivers

by Aimee Herd : Nov 11, 2009 : Wounded Warrior Project

Your action is necessary for Senate to pass a strong bill to help our most severely wounded warriors and their families. -WWP

Wounded Warrior ProjectAccording to the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), a bill which began as the "Family Caregiver Legislation," and which as merged into a larger bill known as "Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2009" (or S.1963), would bring much needed support for severely wounded veterans and those who care for them.

The legislation is bi-partisan, and WWP, Disabled American Veterans, The American Legion and other groups are urging concerned Americans to contact their senators, urging them to vote for the bill.

The groups composed a letter which was sent to Senator Harry Reid. An excerpt from the letter read:

"After many months and sometimes years of hospitalization, some of our most grievously wounded new veterans return home but require extensive ongoing care and assistance with basic activities of daily living. Family members have unhesitatingly altered their lives to become caregivers and assist their loved ones. Often leaving jobs to provide around-the-clock bedside care, these caregivers have suffered loss of earnings and employer-sponsored health and other benefits, and have often had to deplete savings. Not only have family caregivers experienced enormous economic strain, but imagine the psychological, emotional, and overall health impact on those providing full-time care to a veteran living with severe traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, severe burns, or poly-traumatic injuries, often with co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Recognizing the multiple strains these families are under, S. 801 [now S.1963] would provide needed supports to ensure that caregivers are able to continue to provide this assistance and to avoid a need for institutional care…"
