In the ongoing efforts to encourage the expansion of freedom and ultimately peace in the Middle East, President Bush met with Cardinal Nasrallah Sfeir, a Leading Lebanese Christian on Wednesday. The two discussed Syria and Hezbollah as factors in the establishment of free elections in Lebanon.

Cardinal Sfeir is the head of the 900,000-member Maronite Catholic Church in Lebanon, that country’s largest Christian group.

After the meeting, Bush commented, "His eminence and I discussed, of course, Lebanon and our deep desire for Lebanon to be a truly free country, free where people can worship the way they choose to, free where people can speak their mind, free where political parties can flourish, a country based upon free elections."
