Michael P. Desronvil is breaking his silence after becoming the lone juror who refused to find Lindsay Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity. He says he knew exactly where he stood.

While the other jurors were prepared to acquit Clancy on insanity grounds, Desronvil remained unconvinced that she did not understand the gravity of her actions when she killed her three young children.

Now, after a mistrial, intense backlash and questions about everything from his faith to his politics, Desronvil is defending his decision.

"As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence present," Desronvil said in a statement to NewsNation, according to Fox News.

But according to Desronvil, doubt was not the problem.

He said the physical evidence, key witness testimony and the prosecution's case led him to believe Clancy understood what she was doing and had planned the killings.

Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, admitted to killing her three children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months—in January 2023.

Her attorneys argued that severe postpartum mental illness left her unable to understand that her actions were wrong. Prosecutors challenged that defense, arguing the evidence showed planning and intent.

The jury could not agree.

Judge William Sullivan ultimately declared a mistrial, but the controversy did not stay inside the courtroom.

According to the New York Post, Desronvil is a devout Christian, a Republican and the son of Haitian immigrants. Desronvil's lawyer hailed him as a "devoted father and man of God" and asked for prayers for his safety. As attention turned toward the holdout juror, his religious beliefs, political views, finances and personal life came under scrutiny.

The Post also reported allegations from Desronvil's past, including claims involving his personal and financial history, which became another focal point for critics after the mistrial.

Questions emerged over whether Desronvil's faith influenced his decision. His brother pushed back against that suggestion, maintaining that Desronvil carefully examined the case and reached his conclusion from the evidence presented at trial.

The backlash became so intense that Desronvil reportedly left the area because of safety concerns. He also retained attorney Edward Andrew Paltzik, who defended his client's actions as the fulfillment of his civic responsibility.

Scripture is filled with people who stood apart from the crowd. That does not mean every person who stands alone is automatically right. It does mean that conviction cannot simply be measured by how many people agree with you.

Desronvil says he examined the evidence and reached a conclusion he could not abandon simply because 11 other people disagreed.

Prosecutors must now determine whether to try Clancy again.
