Antoni will need to be confirmed to the position by the Senate before starting his four-year term. He currently serves as chief economist at Heritage's Center for the Federal Budget. Previously, he worked as an economist at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.

Earlier this month, Trump fired Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer. He said she had "rigged" jobs figures to make him look bad.

Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts praised Antoni's appointment.
