Law Enforcement Warns: CA LGBTQ+ Suicide Hotline Bill Exposes Kids to Online Predators

CFC Staff : Jul 7, 2025  California Family Council

"I created an account (I'm 70 years old) posing as a 15-year-old boy. Within minutes, I was able to connect with several others via a 'club' that is actually a chat room. One person was of particular interest, as he wanted to take our chat from TrevorSpace and move it to Discord, another social media site I'm familiar with. In an undercover capacity, I have made contact with people on Discord who sell and distribute Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM). This experience further confirms to me that a child on TrevorSpace could easily be taken to a site (Discord) where they could become victimized by a predator." -Kevin Brown, a former police officer and founder of Lives Worth Saving

(Sacramento, CA) — [CaliforniaFamily.org] The California Family Council (CFC) joins law enforcement leaders in sounding the alarm about AB 727, legislation that would require the Trevor Project LGBTQ+ suicide hotline to be printed on all public school student ID cards for grades 7 through college. The bill, authored by Assemblyman Mark Gonzalez (D - Los Angeles), is scheduled for a key hearing before the Senate Education Committee this Wednesday, July 9th. (Image: Pixabay)

While the bill's authors claim the measure is about suicide prevention, law enforcement professionals and family advocates say the real danger lies beneath the surface—in the online ecosystem connected to the Trevor Project known as TrevorSpace.

In recently submitted opposition letters, both the Riverside County Sheriff's Office and Lives Worth Saving, a non-profit specializing in the recovery of child sex trafficking victims, exposed how easily predators can infiltrate TrevorSpace by posing as children. Both organizations conducted undercover tests and found that adults were able to create accounts, bypass age verification, and immediately begin private conversations with minors in chat-room clubs organized around sexually charged topics, without any real-time monitoring or oversight.

Sheriff Chad Bianco of the Riverside County Sheriff's Office stated:

"To underscore this risk, a member of our department in his 40s was able to register on TREVORspace simply by posing as a 13-year-old. Alarmingly, he was prevented from using his real name, not because it violated policy, but because the name was already taken. This forces both minors and adults to create false or obscured identities as a prerequisite to access, further reducing transparency and accountability."

"Once he logged in, he was able to initiate private chats with other users immediately, without restriction or review. He also had access to profile photos and chat images posted by users. Many comments included flirtatious language and excessive flattery, which raised red flags given his understanding of predatory behavior. Many conversations on the platform had nothing to do with LGBTQ+ identity or suicide prevention, instead covering video games, random topics, or personal anecdotes. While seemingly benign, this unstructured engagement makes it easy for adults to build rapport with isolated or emotionally vulnerable youth, a classic setup for grooming or trafficking."

Kevin Brown, a former police officer and founder of Lives Worth Saving, a non-profit in Santa Ana, CA, dedicated to identifying, locating, and recovering victims of human trafficking, added an equally dire warning based on his own undercover operation:

"I created an account (I'm 70 years old) posing as a 15-year-old boy. Within minutes, I was able to connect with several others via a 'club' that is actually a chat room. One person was of particular interest, as he wanted to take our chat from TrevorSpace and move it to Discord, another social media site I'm familiar with."

"In an undercover capacity, I have made contact with people on Discord who sell and distribute Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM). This experience further confirms to me that a child on TrevorSpace could easily be taken to a site (Discord) where they could become victimized by a predator."

"TrevorSpace Is Not Monitored," Brown continued. "Anyone can create an account regardless of their age. The site does not have a way to verify the age of the person making the account. That leaves vulnerable individuals exposed to victimization by predators." He emphasized, "TrevorSpace is a breeding ground for grooming, the process used by predators to gain the trust of a victim for future sexual exploitation."

"TrevorSpace guidelines state the following: 'It's important that you know: TrevorSpace is not designed to provide individualized suicide prevention therapy or crisis intervention.' ... This is a very clear statement that it is up to the child to defend themselves from a predator who is posing as a child on TrevorSpace."

"TrevorSpace advertises its age requirement as 13 to 24 years old. This is alarming, as it purposefully and intentionally places children who are reaching out for help with adults."

"This bill doesn't just put a phone number on the back of a student ID," said Greg Burt, Vice President of the California Family Council. "It opens a digital doorway into TrevorSpace—a so-called 'safe space' that law enforcement now confirms is being exploited by predators. We've been warning about this bill for months. Now sheriffs and trafficking experts are echoing those same warnings. When law enforcement and pro-family advocates agree, it's time for legislators to listen."

TrevorSpace, described by the Trevor Project's own 2023 Annual Report (pg. 18) as "integral" to its mental health strategy, boasts over 81,000 users in more than 160 countries. The platform encourages LGBTQ+ youth ages 13 to 24 to connect and share personal stories. However, there is no meaningful age verification, and direct messaging between strangers—including adults and children—is enabled by default.

In its annual report, the Trevor Project admits that TrevorSpace is used to create "invaluable personal friendships and connections," including with "supportive peers." Yet critics argue this strategy is ripe for grooming, not guidance.

One unsettling "feature" of TrevorSpace is its "Quick Exit" button, originally developed for people reporting human trafficking—a feature now repurposed to let minors quickly hide their activity from parents. This mirrors tactics used on dark web platforms to conceal illegal activity.

"This is not neutral mental health support," Burt added. "It is ideological indoctrination wrapped in rainbow packaging and pushed on emotionally vulnerable kids—without parental consent or accountability."

CFC's investigation further documents how Trevor Project suicide counselors funnel minors to the TrevorSpace, an online forum that hosts groups encouraging minors to reject their families, embrace fringe identities, and explore gender transition—sometimes within minutes of joining.

"There is already a federally sponsored suicide hotline (988) on student IDs," Burt said. "We don't need to add a politically charged, risk-laden alternative that funnels kids into an unsafe, unsupervised online world." Subscribe for free to Breaking Christian News here

CFC urges all Californians concerned about student safety and parental rights to contact members of the Senate Education Committee and demand a "No" vote on AB 727.
