The Gulf of America Act of 2025 was sponsored by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-GA, and co-sponsored by 17 other House Republicans. 

The legislation would codify Executive Order 14172 by President Donald Trump, which directed the secretary of the interior to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in the Geographic Names Information System. 

The legislation would prevent another presidential administration from revoking Trump's order, and mandates that, "Any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the Gulf of Mexico shall be deemed to be a reference to the ‘Gulf of America.'" It also orders the secretary of the interior and the chairman of the Board of Geographic Names to "oversee the implementation of the renaming described in subsection with respect to each Federal document and map."

Trump's executive order mandated that "all federal references to the Gulf of America, including on agency maps, contracts, and other documents and communications shall reflect its renaming." Private companies, which are not subject to the executive order, quickly followed suit to change the name of the gulf on their products. This included name changes on Google Maps, Google Earth, and Apple Map.

The Gulf of America is defined in the order as the "US Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba."
