The vote was 216 to 212 with six Republicans voting "present."

The six Republicans who voted "present" instead of for McCarthy included Rep. Andy Biggs (AZ), Rep. Lauren Boebert (CO), Rep. Elijah Crane (AZ), Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL), Rep. Bob Good (VA) and Rep. Matthew Rosendale (MT).

The fourteenth vote for the speakership was held at 11:07 p.m. on Friday. In that round, McCarthy also got 216 votes to Democrat Rep. Hakeem Jeffries 212 votes. But because four Republicans voted in that round for other members to be speaker—rather than voting "present"—McCarthy's 216 votes fell short of a majority of the votes cast for somebody as speaker.

In the final early morning vote—which made McCarthy speaker—all six Republicans who did not support him voted "present" instead of for another candidate, thus giving him a majority of the votes actually cast for a speaker candidate.

"That was easy, huh," McCarthy said at the beginning of the speech he gave after winning the speakership.

"You know, if the son of a fireman and a grandchild of immigrants can rise to the highest position in the most important legislative body in our country, and if my colleague, Hakeem Jeffries, with his life story can rise to lead his party [then] opportunity and democracy still thrive in America," said McCarthy.
