Dr. Corinne: Dealing With Stress Naturally; These Herbs Can Help

Dr. Corinne Weaver : Oct 23, 2020  DrCorinneWeaver.com

Adaptogens are a unique class of healing plants that help to restore imbalances and normalize physiological functions in the body.

How is your fall season going? Homeschool is in full swing and I am working through the kinks. I am thankful I get to homeschool and continue doing what I love at my office. In all the changes I am remembering daily to tell my body to relax. In fact, I say this word many times. "Corinne, just Relax and Breathe, God is in control and He is helping me through all these changes." See, I am not good with changes so taking adaptogens have been a huge help in these times. I discovered these adaptogens after my mom passed away in 2008 when I was having a hard time adapting to a new life without her. I don't take these herbs all the time just when big changes happen, and I am not able to adapt well with the stresses around me. I know I need them when I feel so overwhelmed and I am not able to accomplish little things in my life. About 3 months ago I knew I needed these special herbs. Within a few weeks I was feeling so much better and was able to focus and reduce my stress levels.

Adaptogens are a unique class of healing plants that help to restore imbalances and normalize physiological functions in the body. A number of these herbs have been investigated for adaptogenic properties that promote hormone balance and protect the body from a wide variety of diseases, including chronic stress-related illnesses.

For example, ashwagandha, medicinal mushrooms, Rhodiola, and holy basil have been studied and proven to offer the following benefits:

-Improve thyroid function

-Lower cholesterol naturally

-Reduce anxiety and depression

-Reduce brain cell degeneration

-Stabilize blood sugar and insulin levels

-Support adrenal gland function

Ashwagandha, in particular, can be extremely effective at balancing hormones and can also help overcome adrenal fatigue. Its effects on cortisol, stress tolerance, and internal stress responses have been studied for decades.

Holy basil, also, helps to regulate cortisol levels making it a viable natural remedy for anxiety and emotional stress. Additionally, studies reveal hormone imbalance related to chemical stress from pollutants and heavy metals, can be restored with holy basil.

Ashwagandha is traditionally used as a powder and made into a tea. If you're interested here is a good recipe.

Tea:

1/2 teaspoon ashwagandha powder

1 cup hot water

1 teaspoon honey

Tonic:

1–2 teaspoons ashwagandha powder

2 cups of plant-based milk

1 tablespoon raw sugar

1/8 teaspoon cardamom

Ashwagandha can also be taken in tablet form or as a liquid extract. If you want to know which ones I love, email me and I will let you know.

You're probably aware that stress can be harmful to your health, but did you know stress can suppress the immune system?

So remember, to help build your immune system; Just Breathe and take your adaptogen herbs.

Stress can impact your weight, your habits, your gut, and your brain, among other things. Because we're faced with stressors throughout the day, managing stress can be challenging. After all, there's never enough time in the day or enough money, and if you're a people pleaser, the word 'no' may not come easy to you.

The problem with feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, and stressed throughout the day is the constant release of stress hormones such as cortisol. Cortisol increases glucose in your bloodstream and ships it to your brain—all in an effort to prepare you to fight or flee. At the same time, non-essential functions, like your immune system and your digestive system, are down-regulated for fight-or-flight.

So, what can you do for fast relief? Deep breathing.

Here's how:
- Place a hand on your belly and the other on your chest.
- Slowly breathe in through your nose. The hand on your stomach should move while the one on your chest should stay in pretty much the same spot. If it looks like you have a big belly, you've nailed it.
- Exhale through your mouth. It should be slightly opened.

Once you've nailed the technique, you won't need to use your hands, and you can remind yourself to practice this breath several times throughout the day. It will automatically 'reset' your brain and reduce stress immediately.

Regular physical activity will also help reduce stress, but this deep breathing technique will instantly provide relief. I have been making a daily effort to keep up on my exercise routine even if it's just a walk in our neighborhood.  The fall weather has been so beautiful here in North Carolina, hopefully it's nice where you are at as well.
