Dr. Corinne: Detoxing for Health and Stamina amid a Stressful Environment

One important aspect of wellness that is often overlooked during a cleanse is mental health. A mental cleanse can help to declutter your mind and reduce stress.

I am an emotional eater so when times get tough, I desire to eat comfort food. Well, after a few weeks of that my energy starts to slip. When my energy is gone, I am not good for anybody. A few weeks ago I woke up and decided to do a cleanse. Today I am waking up with clarity and tons of energy. In fact, later today I am going on a mountain hike. If your energy has been down and you want your brain to clear up, I want to challenge you to cleanse as well. Before you make any drastic changes to your diet, it's essential to check in with your doctor or primary care professional.

One question people often ask when they hear someone is doing a 'cleanse' is why? A cleanse is a way to help the body's natural detoxification process. Our system can take quite a beating from the foods we eat to the excess amounts of stress we place on ourselves. This can lead to a number of adverse health outcomes.

Detoxification occurs in two phases. Phase one is when the liver breaks down toxins into smaller components, which can then be eliminated from the body. Phase two, on the other hand, is the actual process of detoxification where toxins are metabolized into simpler substances and removed from the body by various elimination processes.

Because making small changes can lead to long term results, the first challenge is to keep your digestive system moving and rid the body of excess toxins by drinking more water. If you experience chronic digestive issues such as IBS, constipation, and bloating, you can support your digestive tract by adding a chlorophyll-rich powder supplement to one cup of water each day.

During a cleanse, you'll want to help your body function optimally by providing it with the nutrients it needs. These nutrients include B vitamins, flavonoids, and antioxidants found in fresh vegetables and fruits. Glutathione, found in avocados, watermelon, asparagus, walnuts, leafy greens, essential fats found in extra virgin olive oil, cold-pressed coconut oil, and flaxseed oil, and amino acids found in nuts, seeds.

One way to boost your intake of nutrient-rich vegetables is with juicing or smoothies. Juicing can improve circulation and stimulate the liver to burn fat. It also allows your body to receive a concentrated source of phytonutrients that can't be obtained by eating a large serving of vegetables. Smoothies, on the other hand, are more substantial than juices—thicker, filling, and rich in soluble fiber for digestive health. They are also less taxing on the digestive system.

When following a cleanse or detox, you typically reduce your intake of macronutrients. These are the nutrients needed in larger amounts, including fat, carbohydrates, and protein. To ensure you maintain a healthy protein intake, try incorporating a daily protein shake into your routine. This is essential as your body needs adequate amino acids for the construction of enzymes and other molecules integral to the detoxification pathways. Look for a protein made with organic pea protein to support optimum health and wellbeing. Good plant sources of protein include nuts, seeds, dark greens, and tempeh.

What we use to fuel our bodies can either enhance or hinder detoxification efforts. To support digestion, elimination, and help shift to a healthier you I challenge you to eliminate coffee, alcohol, sugar, dairy, meat, and gluten. By removing these items from your diet, your body will get a much-needed break.

Now, it is important to incorporate antimicrobials and anti-inflammatory foods into your diet. These foods include garlic, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, manuka honey, thyme, rosemary, blueberries, green vegetables, and green tea, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, cold-pressed coconut oil, bone broth, almonds, pineapple, avocado, sweet potato, and carrots.

Adding organic matcha to your routine will provide an excellent source of EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a molecule that naturally has metabolism boosting and thermogenic effects in the body. Try making yourself a tasty cup of matcha tea.

Are you familiar with dry brushing? It's a simple process that kicks your cleanse into overdrive. Dry body brushing helps stimulate the lymphatic system by aiding the flow of lymph fluid throughout the body. Pay close attention to the inner thighs and armpits, which house the greatest number of lymph nodes. The lymphatic system plays a vital role in elimination, helping to move toxins through the body. 

First, you'll want to select a brush with natural bristles and a long handle for hard to reach places. Remember to brush towards the heart, which is in the same flow as the lymphatic system. Try starting at the feet, using smooth strokes up the legs. Repeat the same process with the arms, starting with the palms of the hands and brushing up the arm toward the heart. On the stomach and armpits, brush in a circular clockwise motion.

Aim for 10 strokes on each part of the body.

Regular exercise is a must for any healthy lifestyle. Preventing weight gain, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, or depression are just some of the benefits. Physical activity rewards you by slowing down the effects of aging, increasing energy levels, reducing fatigue, and giving you a lean, toned look.

During your cleanse, you want to honor your body by participating in less vigorous physical activity. This includes walking and low-intensity activities.

During your cleanse track how your body feels throughout the cleanse. Consider how you were feeling prior to the cleanse. What has changed? Are you feeling more energetic? Has digestive upset subsided?

Whatever you are experiencing, take note. If you're up to it, share one of the changes you've experienced with a friend.

Maintaining a social life when following any diet can be a challenge. After all, who wants to be tempted with an array of tasty foods you're trying to avoid?!

Find ways to follow your cleanse while maintaining your social activities. Socializing with loved ones is also important to our wellbeing. If you typically meet friends for happy hour on Fridays, look for a place with yummy mocktails so you can partake. If Sunday brunch is your day to meet up with friends, try hosting your own with a DIY smoothie bar.

One important aspect of wellness that is often overlooked during a cleanse is mental health. A mental cleanse can help to declutter your mind and reduce stress.

Here are some tips for a mental cleanse:

- Spend some time outdoors, leave your phone behind if you can.

- Set a timeline for the amount of time spent on social media.

- Remove social media apps from your phone and only check them through your browser.

- Do more de-stressing activities.

On completion of your cleanse, it's crucial to safely reintroduce foods back into your diet. This means selecting one food at a time every few days.
