Dr. Corinne: Protect Your Gallbladder and Avoid Painful Stones

Dr. Corinne Weaver : Jul 19, 2019  DrCorinneWeaver.com

But if you've already lost your gallbladder, don't lose heart—there's much you can do to facilitate healing.

A few weeks ago, I saw a patient who had a gallbladder attack and she needed her gallbladder removed. She was having intense pain in her right upper abdomen through her back. The pain started about 30 minutes after eating a big fatty meal. She'd had the pain before, but this time the pain didn't go away and it keep dragging on. Some people don't get a second chance to save their organs. (Image: Pixabay)

Did you know in the US, about 20 million people have gallstones, and each year about 700,000 patients have their gallbladders removed to relieve troublesome symptoms (1)? Also, did you know that about 15% of these patients still have digestive issues after the gallbladder has been removed? It makes sense because God did not put the gallbladder in your body for no reason.

What does the gallbladder do?

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that collects and stores bile from the liver. This is very important because bile is what helps the body to digest fat. What you eat has a direct effect on the health of your gallbladder. Gallstones form when the bile that comes into the gallbladder is too high in cholesterol or bilirubin, or is too low in bile salts. Most gallstones themselves are made from hardened cholesterol.

When these gallstones form, they can block the flow from the gallbladder to the small intestine, then bile can't get through. If your body doesn't dissolve these stones, then the gallbladder may need to be removed.

Symptoms of gallbladder issues besides pain in the upper abdomen

  1. Nausea or vomiting
  2. Fever
  3. Changes in bowel movements like unexplained diarrhea or light-colored or chalky stools
  4. Changes in urine, darker urine
  5. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin)

Ways to take care of your gallbladder before complications occur.

  1. Moving daily can help reduce cholesterol levels and help prevent gallstones from forming (2). Walking is the best exercise. I recommend getting 10,000 steps a day.
  2. Foods high in sugars and unhealthy fats can contribute to gallstones, so a diet with less unhealthy fat and more fiber can help. Best foods to add to your diet are dark, leafy greens, fish, citrus fruits, and brown rice (2). Good healthy fats like olive or coconut oil are fine. In fact, consuming healthy fats in small amounts over the course of the day is better than overconsuming all at one time.
  3. Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) daily (2). In the morning, I do an ACV shot that includes: 2 Tbsp. of ACV, 8 oz. of water, 1 tsp. of cinnamon, ¼ tsp of turmeric, 1-4 grams of powdered vitamin C, and sometimes I add a shake of cayenne pepper if I want to get my metabolism going. If you can't take the taste, you can add 2 oz. of organic apple juice to this or ½ Tbsp. of honey/maple syrup. I use a ¼ of tsp. of this vitamin C
  4. Taking magnesium at night can help the gallbladder empty (2). It can also ease spasms in the gallbladder. Click here for my all-time favorite magnesium.

NOTE: If you would like some, just email me or call my office.

What if it's too late and you need gallbladder surgery?

Here are some tips after getting your gallbladder removed. The key to healing is focusing on your whole digestion system.

  1. Low-fat, low-cholesterol, and high fiber foods are best for you. Your diet should include chicken or vegetable broth and drinking fresh, juiced vegetables. Artichokes, beets, and dandelion greens are great veggies to help support your liver health (3). This formula has been very helpful for some of my patients. It's called https://cweaver.metagenics.com/lipo-gen and this formula has artichokes in it. If you still have your gallbladder and you have some gallbladder symptoms arise this supplement can be very helpful to you as well.
  2. Now that you don't have your gallbladder, you may be deficient in your fat-soluble supplements (A, D, E, and K). You can get checked for this via bloodwork. More doctors today are checking for vitamin D deficiencies because many studies show people with low vitamin D have heart disease, cognitive issues, and cancer. Get checked today!
  3. You may even need digestive enzymes and or bile salts. Ox bile, or bile salts, help improve the breakdown of fats when you don't have a gallbladder.
  4. Lastly, if you are still having digestive issues after your surgery contact a doctor who can find the underlying cause and help your digestive tract get back on track.

The role hormones play with the gall bladder.

Did you know that estrogen therapy has been associated with an increased incidence of gallbladder disease in both sexes (4)? Further, increased progesterone levels have been implicated in impairment of gallbladder motility in pregnancy (4). These studies indicate that the human gallbladder contains both estrogen and progesterone receptors, that the presence of these receptors may explain the sensitivity of gallbladder tissue to these hormones and that certain aspects of gallbladder function may be mediated by the interaction of steroid hormones with these receptors (4). If you are currently taking birth control pills, hormone replacement drugs or cholesterol medications then discuss with your doctor whether these might be contributing to your gallbladder issues.

Not sure where to start or need further advice? It is important to start with a comprehensive blood analysis and hair tissue analysis to check on the body's foundation as a whole. This can help determine what you need to be consuming from a dietary and supplement standpoint from the list above. It can also help indicate if there is something you need to be avoiding. What has worked for someone you know, may be completely different than what will work for you. Dr. Corinne Weaver is a compassionate upper cervical chiropractor, educator, motivational speaker, mother of three, and internationally bestselling author. In 2004, she founded the Upper Cervical Wellness Center in Indian Trail, North Carolina. Over the last 13 years, she has helped thousands of clients restore their brain to-body function. When she was 10 years old, she lost her own health as the result of a bike accident that led to having asthma and allergy issues that she thought she would always have to endure. Then, after her first upper cervical adjustment at age 21, her health began to improve thanks to upper cervical care and natural herbal remedies. This enabled her to create a drug-free wellness lifestyle for herself and her family, and she also enthusiastically discovered her calling to help children heal naturally.

Dr. Weaver was named one of Charlotte Magazine's "Top Doctors" in 2016 and is now a number-one internationally bestselling author to two books: Learning How to Breathe and No More Meds.

Upper Cervical Wellness Center is known for finding the root cause of health concerns through lifestyle changes, diagnostic testing, nutraceutical supplementation, and correction of subluxation (as opposed to just medicating the symptoms). The practice offers cutting-edge technological care at its state-of-the-art facility, including laser-aligned upper cervical X-rays, bioimpedance analysis (measures body composition), digital thermography (locates thermal abnormalities characterized by skin inflammation), and complete nutritional blood analysis, which is focused on disease prevention.
