Dr. Corinne: Overcoming InfertilityRecent studies link inadequate vitamin D with infertility and miscarriage. Have your levels checked to find out how much you need.
What exactly is infertility? Infertility, according to Women's Health, is not being able to get pregnant within one year of trying, or within six months of trying in women over 35. Women unable to stay pregnant may also be considered infertile (Office of Women's Health, 2018). There are many factors to getting pregnant, as Women's Health describes on their website: -A woman's body must release an egg from one of her ovaries (ovulation). -The egg must go through a fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb). -A man's sperm must join with (fertilize) the egg along the way. -The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation). Infertility can happen if there are complications with any of these processes. Nearly 12% of women in the United States between 15 to 44 years of age experience difficulty getting pregnant and carrying pregnancy to term (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.) Two kinds of infertility The percentages given above make up two types of infertility: -Primary infertility Is the inability to get or stay pregnant to term despite having unprotected sex for a year or longer. -Secondary infertility Is the inability to get or stay pregnant to term after the birth of one or more children. Causes of infertility Obstetrician and writer for EMedicineHealth, Jairo E Garcia, writes that the causes for infertility are varied but are primarily related to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, environmental and occupational factors, inadequate diet and exercise, stress, toxic effects related to alcohol and smoking, and age (EMedicineHealth, 2017). Diet As stated earlier, I started my patient with a healthy diet that included organic foods. Pesticides can affect estrogen and other hormones. I recommended omega -3's to help reduce inflammation. I recommended foods rich in vitamin E, C, and folate. I had her avoid high-fat processed meats, grains, refined sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. I had her focus on a healthy diet and eating for fertility. I gave her plenty of healthy recipes and she followed her diet plan. I am so proud of her! When I retested all of her blood labs, they were normal. So, why not a baby? Stress Well, as much as I would like to say a healthy diet is enough, it is not. The big factor people forget is STRESS!! For her it was stress in her nervous system. She needed upper cervical specific chiropractic to help her body communicate efficiently. Whether it is stress causing infertility or infertility causing stress is up for debate, but one thing is clear, and that is that stress takes a toll on the body, so finding ways to reduce stress is going to help boost fertility. Recommendations for easing stress -Keep the lines of communication open with your partner. -Get emotional support so that you don't feel isolated. Individual or couple counseling, support groups, and books on infertility can help validate your feelings and help you cope. -Learn stress reduction techniques such as breathing, chiropractic, or counseling. -Avoid excessive intake of caffeine and other stimulants. -Exercise regularly to release physical and emotional tension. One thing I always talk about is breathing and in my book, Learning How to Breathe I talk about some breathing exercises. Here are some exercises to try for relaxation: Diaphragmatic breathing Put one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. As you breathe in deeply for about 2 seconds through your nose, your belly should stick out a bit. Feel the air expanding your stomach and then breathe out slowly through your nose. 4-7-8 Breathe in your nose for 4 seconds, Hold the breath in for 7 counts, then release it in 8 counts, and repeat at least three times. I also love adding my favorite essential oils to the air as I breathe. If you would like more exercises to help improve your breathing. You can get my series here.https://mybodysite.com/dr-corinne/physical-breathing If you purchase between now and the end of October I will send you my favorite essential oil roller bottle called Relax and my book. Supplements While it is ideal to get our vitamins and nutrients from the food that we eat, it is sometimes advised to incorporate some added supplements to help boost fertility. Below are some supplements that help with fertility. Note that it is advised to check first with your functional medicine doctor to find out what supplements would be most helpful for you. VITAMIN D Recent studies link inadequate vitamin D with infertility and miscarriage. Have your levels checked to find out how much you need. VITAMIN C Vitamin C is good for both male and female infertility. Aim for at least 2,000 mg a day preconception. FOLATE Is a necessary vitamin in early pregnancy to prevent complications, but it is most beneficial when taken for several months before the pregnancy as well as during pregnancy. It helps cell division and promotes ovulation. I would recommend taking up to 5,000 micrograms a day and women hoping to get pregnant should take at least 2,000 micrograms a day. ZINC Very important for cell division including sperm production and ovulation. Best when taken in combination with b-vitamins. SELENIUM Helps protect the body from free radicals and protects sperm and egg. Known to help cell division and might prevent miscarriage. B-VITAMINS Optimizing B vitamin levels can increase luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone to improve fertility. Babies bring such joy to a family and I love being a part of those precious moments. Get Tested First!

Keep Breathing, Dr. Corinne Weaver Email: Dr@DrCorinneWeaver.com Dr. Corinne Weaver is a compassionate upper cervical chiropractor, educator, motivational speaker, mother of three, and internationally bestselling author. In 2004, she founded the Upper Cervical Wellness Center in Indian Trail, North Carolina. Over the last 13 years, she has helped thousands of clients restore their brain to-body function. When she was 10 years old, she lost her own health as the result of a bike accident that led to having asthma and allergy issues that she thought she would always have to endure. Then, after her first upper cervical adjustment at age 21, her health began to improve thanks to upper cervical care and natural herbal remedies. This enabled her to create a drug-free wellness lifestyle for herself and her family, and she also enthusiastically discovered her calling to help children heal naturally. Dr. Weaver was named one of Charlotte Magazine's "Top Doctors" in 2016 and is now a number-one internationally bestselling author to two books: Learning How to Breathe and No More Meds. Upper Cervical Wellness Center is known for finding the root cause of health concerns through lifestyle changes, diagnostic testing, nutraceutical supplementation, and correction of subluxation (as opposed to just medicating the symptoms). The practice offers cutting-edge technological care at its state-of-the-art facility, including laser-aligned upper cervical X-rays, bioimpedance analysis (measures body composition), digital thermography (locates thermal abnormalities characterized by skin inflammation), and complete nutritional blood analysis, which is focused on disease prevention.
