Putting it in perspective, the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010 was a magnitude 7.0, making yesterday's quake the most powerful to hit the region yet.

According to Accuweather.com, the epicenter of the quake was situated west of Jamaica and was very shallow—only 6.2 miles.

A tsunami alert, originally issued for the coastlines of countries including Jamaica, Mexico, Honduras, Cuba, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Guatemala was subsequently cancelled.

Still, residents are warned to beware of dangerous waves.

So far, there are no reports of deaths or injuries.
