Maybe you are wondering where a subluxation comes from. It is the direct result of everything you do; whether they're positive or negative, lifestyle stresses result in nerve interference, which then needs to be addressed. For example, during the holiday season, we tend to consume a substantial amount of unhealthy food and sugar and spend more time with family (which some would consider stressful). What I have seen is that after the holiday season, people typically get sick. That's often caused by a subluxation. The unhealthy food and sugar and increased family time represent lifestyle stresses (even if the latter is considered positive) because our body is extremely sensitive to external factors. Therefore, upper cervical chiropractic care needs to be an essential component of your life. Not only that, it's something we encourage your entire family to consider doing.

Upper cervical doctors are different than other chiropractors. We use specific, laser-aligned x-rays to help us determine how to correct your spine. To perform the right correction to the upper spine and head, x-rays need to be performed to measure and examine your unique anatomy.

Another tool I use is thermography, which I explained earlier in my columns. I use paraspinal thermography (heat reading) to establish the pattern the nervous system is making and then monitor the readings during each visit. The kids call it the tingle machine!! I believe you should hold your own spinal correction for as long as possible, so I only correct your spine when the thermography objectively indicates that a correction is needed. If I find that I am correcting your spine every time I see you, that is a sign that your lifestyle is creating an imbalance; at that point, I will need to review some lifestyle changes with you so that you can heal. Healing starts when you are holding your correction and your brain-to-body communication is 100% flowing.

As an upper cervical doctor, I don't snap, twist, or pop the upper spine—instead, I use a gentle realignment procedure to bring the head and neck into better balance. Because the correction is so close to the brainstem, the upper cervical doctor expects immediate changes in the overall function of the body. Here is a story about a girl named Jamie that may help you to understand what I'm talking about. (Her mom wrote down the story.)

Jamie fell inside the house when she was taking off her shoes on March 14, 2008. At the time, she was 8½ years old and in the 2nd grade. She had a 14-month-long migraine due to the concussion she had in conjunction with the fall.

Before meeting Dr. Corinne Weaver, Jamie tried adult migraine meds, in-hospital IV treatment, physical therapy, massages, swimming, and running. None of these treatments worked.

Ever since her fall, Jamie had had a daily headache and her eyes were always dilated. When Dr. Weaver took spinal X-rays of Jamie, the results made Jamie's mom think of a question mark.

Your eyes can become dilated when the sympathetic nervous system is activated. In this case, Jamie's concussion had caused inflammation in her brain and vagus nerve, which led to Jamie's headaches and dilated pupils.

Jamie got under upper cervical care at my office and saw improvements after her first correction. She was glad someone had told her to come to my office and her mom had listened.
