Some had speculated that there might be some "scolding" or lecturing by the pontiff toward Trump, as the two did not always see things eye-to-eye, during the President's campaign.

However, according to a Catholic News Agency (CNA) report, the private meeting of about 30 minutes seemed to go well.

Breitbart notedContrary to mainstream media predictions, the meeting involved no sulking or scolding, and the two men honestly seemed to enjoy each other's company.

President Trump was first greeted by Pope Francis with a "Welcome!" to which the President replied, "Thank you very much, this is such a great honor."

Pope Francis said he was "very happy to meet" Trump, and the two sat down at the Pope's desk in the papal library, joined only by Pope Francis' translator, according to CNA.

The report noted: During the "cordial discussions," the two expressed hope for peaceful collaboration between the government and the Catholic Church in the United States that it may be "engaged in service to the people in the fields of healthcare, education and assistance to immigrants," a Vatican communique on the meeting said.

Pope Francis and President Trump also exchanged views "on various themes relating to international affairs, the promotion of peace in the world through political negotiation and interreligious dialogue, with particular reference to the situation in the Middle East and the protection of Christian communities." Following the private part of their meeting, gifts were exchanged between President Trump and the Pope, and their entourages, including First Lady Melania Trump; daughter Ivanka, Trump's assistant and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, his assistant and senior advisor.

Pope Francis gifted Trump with some traditional documents including his environmental encyclical, and a copy of his message for the 2017 World Day of Peace, which he told the President that he had signed "personally" for him. And he also gave Trump a medallion that symbolized peace and unity, "so that you become an instrument of peace," he reportedly told Trump through a translator.

In turn, President Trump gave Pope Francis a set of First-edition books by Martin Luther King, Jr., (a favorite of the pope) saying: "I think you'll enjoy them, I hope you do."

He also gave the pontiff a handmade bronze sculpture of a flowering lotus by artist Geoffrey Smith of Stuart, Florida, titled "Rising Above," which is meant to symbolize "the possibility for growth and triumph in the face of trying times," and a piece of granite from the "Stone of Hope" statue from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C., according to a Charisma News report.

The two leaders shook hands, and President Trump told Pope Francis, "Thank you, thank you, I won't forget what you said."

Just what Trump was referring to was not publicly shared, and has sparked some curiosity. (Photo: First Lady Melania and President Donald Trump visit the Sistine Chapel/via Twitter-@AlanHoldren)

During their time in Rome, First Lady Melania Trump visited the Vatican-owned pediatric hospital, Bambino Gesu; while the President's daughter and assistant advisor, Ivanka attended a meeting with the Community of Sant'Egidio to discuss efforts to oppose human trafficking, according to the CNA report.

President Trump and First Lady Melania also visited the Sistine Chapel before leaving Italy for their next stop, Brussels, Belgium.
