Tim Tebow Shares Heartbreaking News About His Dad That’s Shifting His Quest for Marriage and Kids

News Staff : Nov 4, 2016  Faithit.com

Tebow is working on forging a stronger relationship with his dad who he’s become “drastically protective” of since getting the news of the diagnosis.

In the most recent issue of PEOPLE, the 29-year-old shared, “My dad has Parkinson’s disease.”

His 69-year-old father, Bob, was actually diagnosed last spring, and Tebow can vividly remember being in an Atlanta hotel room when he got the news.

“Talking to him that night, I wished that I could have been there with him. I asked him whether he needed me to come home, and he said, ‘No, you need to keep doing what you’re doing.’”

While his father’s positive outlook was encouraging, Tebow admits, “It wasn’t a good night. I got really emotional. I mean, this is my dad.”

“I love being around him,” he said. “We watch ball, talk ball. But I also go to him for advice about spiritual questions. There are times where he sees something from a different place than I do.”

Realizing now, more than ever, that his father’s days are numbered, Tebow’s reflecting on how important it is to have his dad in his kids’ lives.

“I want my kids to know my dad, and to learn the same lessons from him that I did. That would make me happy,” he said. He’s particularly passionate about having kids through adoption.

As Tebow approaches 30, he admits that waiting for the right woman to start a family with is hard, but he knows it will happen in God’s time.

“I can’t wait, but I think it’s something that I’ll have to trust God for,” he said. “He’ll bring someone along at the right time. But, that doesn’t mean that I don’t want it, though!”

Though he’s got multiple full-time jobs at the moment, Tebow believes finding ‘Mrs. Right’ will easily shift her into his number one priority.

“Baseball takes a lot of time, and it’s not like I don’t have several other full-time jobs,” he said. “But I’m definitely ready for a relationship and I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait for that, and I can’t wait to have kids.”

“I think when I find the right woman, I’ll make her the priority,” he added. “You don’t know where you’ll meet the right person at, so you can’t make it a priority until you find the right woman.”

So what is he looking for in his future wife?

“I’m looking for a woman who I’m attracted to. I think that’s a very big part of it. People will say it’s just about the inside. No. It’s about both. You have to be attracted to her inside and out.”

And shared interests?

“People always say you’ve got to find someone with the same likes as you. I don’t think so. She can have different likes than me; she’s just got to love Jesus and love people. That’s what I’m looking for.”

And the cherry on top…

“Beyond that, I really want someone who enjoys life. I want someone who every day, you want to be a better person for her.”

In the meantime, Tebow is working on forging a stronger relationship with his dad who he’s become “drastically protective” of since getting the news of the diagnosis.

His father’s enlightening perspective amidst his Parkinson’s battle is a true inspiration for his son.

Bob told PEOPLE, “I’m not going to retire from the Great Commission to spread the gospel. I may be slower, and I may shake on the way, but I still have work to do.”

He regularly does mission work in the Philippines, particularly at the Tebow CURE hospital as well as local prisons and orphanages.

Tebow loves seeing his dad working in a third-world nation, helping the hurting as Jesus did. “That’s what he’s meant to do,” he said. “It’s his most comfortable place to be in the world.”

Both Bob and Tim say they’re at peace with whatever may happen next and are just thankful for the time they’ve spent together.

“You never know how much time you have on earth,” said Tebow. “But my father has an incredible legacy that has nothing to do with me. I’m so proud of him.”
