"Our theory," said Lethbridge study co-author Saurya Das, "suggests that the age of the universe could be infinite."

Noting that the Big Bang theory was extrapolated from Albert Einstein's work, Robert Brandenberger, a cosmologist from McGill University explains that even though there were holes in Einstein's theory of relativity, scientists have always worked as though his equations were absolutely true.

"So when we say that the universe begins with a 'big bang,' we really have no right to say that," he told LiveScience.
