(Newcastle, UK)—In the past, when a guest staying at the Indigo Hotel in the British city of Newcastle opens the night table drawer, they will see a copy of the Bible, placed there by the Gideons.

However, now the traditional paper copy of the Bible has been replaced by the Bible on a Kindle e-reader.

The switch began on a 2-week trial basis at the beginning of July, and has been made permanent, according to a hotel official.

"We have permanently replaced the paper Bibles with Kindles and our guests think it's a great idea as they can also download books to read whilst they stay," said the official.

The general manager of the Indigo Hotel in Newcastle, Adam Munday, noted that the idea "was inspired by Newcastle's literary heritage," the city having been a "publishing hotspot."

Guests can also add other books, at their own expense, to the Kindle in their room to read while they stay.

When asked about the possibility of theft, the hotel official replied that Housekeeping does keep track of the e-readers, and that "so far we have kept all the Kindles; we do have some very honest guests."

It's possible the Bible on Kindle will replace the paper Bible copies in all of the 44 hotels around the world that are part of the chain.
