Late Missionary to Korea Honored in Ohio

Teresa Neumann : Feb 28, 2011  Meredith Heagney - AP

"Back then, being a missionary was illegal and punishable by death, so Allen entered the country in his role as a physician. He saved the life of a member of the royal family and was allowed to establish the country's first modern hospital."

In a nutshell, Allen was instrumental in bringing the Gospel to Korea and—because he was a doctor and a diplomat as well—helping that country establish a lasting system of modern medicine.

He was born in 1858 in Delaware, Ohio, (where little is known about him), and died in 1932.

Recently, a group of South Koreans travelled to Ohio to honor his memory.

"I'm so thankful for him," said Ko Kyung-Ryang. "Because of him, other Protestant missionaries could come."

Said another, "He came to Korea, and we can have the religion and know the God."
