"While the neoatheists pay only cursory attention to dismantling arguments for God, they spend most of their time painting his followers as uncultured rubes. The fact that religion has inexplicably persisted, even despite Copernicus, Darwin and the Enlightenment, doesn't seem to have much sociological meaning for them."

An opinion piece has appeared in the New York Daily News that I consider worthy of sharing. The author is S. E. Cupp and her comments—a series of rebukes and chastisements—are geared, as she says, toward her "fellow atheists." (Photo: NYDN)

Ironically, Cupp chides atheists for their arrogance while praising her father, and other Believers, for their humility and braving ridicule to find God.

Her piece begins: "Back in college, while I was busy pretending that a blottoed discussion of Nietzsche over $1 beers made me an intellectual giant, my fifty something father, who'd worked so hard to send me there, was quietly being saved. Having long eschewed any ties to his Southern Baptist upbringing, he suddenly found himself born again and on a quest to know God better."

"As a longtime atheist," she continues, "I was a little surprised. But eventually I came to be relieved by this development. While my friends' fathers were buying flashy sports cars and exchanging their wives for models, my own father was turning inward and asking: Is there more to life than this?"

Cupp's "revelations" apparently haven't resulted in her beginning her own journey of faith, yet. But, considering how many of us were in her shoes before starting on our spiritual quests—and the fact that she has a father praying for her—it wouldn't surprise me if someday we read her born-again testimony.

Oh, the power of the Resurrection and the seemingly minor, unconnected building blocks of life experiences that build God's Kingdom! Sometimes scary, often comical, it's a privilege, and always a joy, to watch it grow.
