UPDATE ON CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN HAITI from YWAM HaitiCHOLERA UPDATE: [10/24/10] —Yesterday was difficult. We didn?t get in until after dark. We arrived with our 4x4 and a large truck, supplied by Esbenshade Green House in PA, loaded with bottle water. The truck was to be a mobile supply station and we were to truck in the water to remote and difficult areas that had not received any assistance. The first run went well. The second run we were blocked with trees and rocks thrown in the road. We called for Police backup and they responded fairly well. Yet we were unable to go back in to complete our second run until 2:00pm. When we got back to the point where you could go no further, as everything was under water, we distributed the life giving water. Afterward, the people said; "You?re the first that have gotten to us, thank you for not forgetting about us." Gervies is a heavily voodoo practicing area. How awesome it was to be a Christian and get life-giving water to them! We did a third run by taking a chance as the police had to go to another call. We got in, but on our way out a truck got stuck and blocked us in with two critical ill people. It well into the night before we were able to figure a way to dig a new path for our truck to get around the blocked road. The patients made it to the hospital before dying but we have not been able to hear how they are doing. Through the 4x4 water distribution we were able to rescue five in total who were critically sick and would have most likely died if we had not got them out. Two days ago the muddy road blocked Water Missions from distributing water filters in the area. Water for Missions and Operation Blessing has partnered with Food for the Poor and they are doing a good job with getting water filters up and function but more are needed. They had scheduled four but as a result of the road conditions they only distributed one. We have contacted some equipment operators and we believe we can mobilize to do some major repairs to the road that could allow for easier access to these areas in a matter of a day. Our budget for this work is $10,000. This is a pressing need. Many have been sending emails asking if they could come and help. I will be attending a meeting with all the health, water and communication network assisting with the outbreak. We should be getting a better report, then, as to how things are and what plans are in place. Meanwhile, we continue to need support with prayer, logistics and finances. Taking the High Places! Terry W. Snow National Director YWAM Haiti [10/21/10]"Many, Many, Many people are dead or sick! " (St. Marc, Haiti)?Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Haiti has been established there long before the horrendous earthquake ravaged the area. Because of that, YWAM has been a key source of help after it happened.
Recently, I received an urgent prayer request from founder and national director of YWAM Haiti, Terry Snow. That prayer bulletin follows, thank you for praying. From YWAM Haiti: We'd like to call people to prayer for our city and the countryside surrounding it. There seems to be an outbreak of some kind of a water-borne disease where people who contract it come down with severe diarrhea resulting in death within 24-48 hours. We do not have concrete numbers of how many have actually died to date, only scattered reports from Haitians seeking aid and purified water saying; "Many, Many, Many people are dead or sick!" The hospital in St Marc is filling up with cases and our clinic down the road has been made ready for overflow. Symptoms point to Cholera but that has not been confirmed, test result due in today. If it is Cholera the problem isn't medicine, they claim they have the cure, but getting it to the people in time. We are focused on three things, distribution of purified water, transportation of the sick and education on sanitation. The disease seems to have originated in the countryside (known as the 5th section) where the river has flooded several times over the last few weeks. The minister of health for our area is hot on the case and we are in good partnership and communication with him. We have made our Clinic in Balague (5th Section in the heart of the problem) available as needed, Nouveau Depart Health Center in St. Marc City is available as needed and our Mercy Truck Ambulance has already been mobilized to transport the most serious cases.
