A First Nations First: The Sing to the Mountains Music Festival

Aimee Herd : May 26, 2010  Jonathan Maracle – Broken Walls Ministries

"It has been something I've dreamed of for a long time but the time hasn't been right before now." –Jonathan Maracle

Although I do not have any First Nations lineage (to my knowledge), my heart has always been for First Nations people.

I have appreciated the incredible compassion and creativity among the Native people; especially expressed in music.

First Nations flutes and drums can communicate your heart—and God's heart for you—in a unique way, not found in other instruments.

One of the First Nations bands I've really enjoyed over the years is Broken Walls, featuring Jonathan Maracle, a Mohawk of the Tyendinaga Territory, in Ontario, Canada.

Broken WallsRecently, I had a chance to speak with Jonathan, who is very excited about an upcoming, unprecedented event; the very first annual "Sing to the Mountains Music Festival," held in Meers, Oklahoma. It will begin on Friday, June 25th and go through Sunday, June 27th, 2010.

An excerpt from that conversation is included below, as I asked Jonathan about this very special event. For more information on it, follow the source link provided.

The Sing To The Mountains Music Festival is like no other music festival because...
It is the first of its kind in that all bands and drums are made up of Native American (First Nations) people from across North America. It has been something I've dreamed of for a long time but the time hasn't been right before now.

Why is the location of the festival so significant?
First of all its location is at the base of the Wichita Mountains at a beautiful 160 acre site called "Camp Y'Shua."

Camp Y'ShuaYou know, I didn't realize the meaning of hosting this event in Oklahoma until after the planning had started. I realized that this is where Native American people were forced to move to, from their homelands. It hosts the largest variety of "Native Nations" in North America who are the decedents of those who suffered horrible injustices, like the "Trail of Tears."

It is a place where the beauty of our people groups still exists along with the shame and bitterness of the past.

I believe we are in a new time—a time to celebrate our survival, a time to celebrate who we are as "First Nations People."

A time to see shame replaced with dignity and self respect. A time to come together and celebrate that our Creator loves us for who we are and that He sent His Son "Jesus" to give His life for us. …That we no longer have to buy into "Cultural Conversion" before we can know the gift of the love of Jesus.

Jesus died for every tribe, tongue, people and nation and there are no prerequisites. He said in John 6:37 "Come as you are."

What do you hope to see happen at the event?
That we realize that our heritage is a gift from our Creator, not to be worshiped, but celebrated, without regard to our differences.

My hope is that through all our differences would rise a sound of one voice to honor our Creator.

That it will be a celebration of our diversity, and, our ability to be free to rejoice in it.

My hope is that as we celebrate together the beauty of our diversity would bring glory to God.

Who can/should come to this event?
This event is open to all people to come and enjoy worshiping God (our Creator) with "Native American people."

How can people get involved, and support it now—prior to the day of the Festival?
Get the word out to all your friends and contacts. Come and join us! This is the first event of this kind and we have contracted a Sound System to handle 3000 people. The price is right... no actually it's more than right!

WHAT A GREAT WAY TO START YOUR SUMMER!
