The breakthrough—a combination of work pioneered by Professor Stanley Riddell of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and a team of doctors from Italy—centers around the manipulation of white blood cells, also known as T-cells.

It's called immunotherapy.

In essence, T-cells were removed from the blood of patients in the cancer trial and then genetically "modified" before being injected back into the patient.

Doctors and researchers were astonished by the results.

"These are in patients that have failed everything. Most would be projected to have two to five months to live. This is potentially paradigm-shifting in terms of how we treat them.

"I think immunotherapy has finally made it to a pillar of cancer therapy."

Although the study was originally conducted on blood cancers, Riddell's team is also working on using T-cell technology in targeting solid tumors.
