From Being Tortured in an Egyptian Prison to Launching "The Way TV" in California

Dan Wooding : Jun 16, 2014  Assist News Service

"The Lord has allowed us Copts and Evangelicals] to work together in real unity. Jesus Christ is the only Person that has to be glorified. We have one law, and one Biblical aspect that we all now follow." -Joseph Nasrallah

Joseph Nasrallah(Beverly Hills, CA)—When Joseph Nasrallah was locked up in a prison cell in Egypt, he could never have dreamed that one day, he would move to America, and launch "The Way TV," an Arabic Christian satellite network that is reaching the Middle East, and his homeland of Egypt, with the Good News of Jesus Christ. I met up with Nasrallah at the Beverly Hills Hilton on June 1, 2014, where he was attending Pat Boone's 80th Birthday "Celebrity Roast." I found a quiet spot and asked Joseph about the time he was imprisoned in a stark Egyptian cell, and also about his early life.

"I started as a singer and composer in Egypt," he began. "I have cut ten albums up to now, and then the 'media dream' came to me when I was in jail in Egypt."

"I was arrested when I was on a military base and I was distributing Bibles to my friends there. They captured me and put me in jail for four months, where I was tortured and persecuted every day for two hours. They broke my left leg very badly, and also burned my back with a cigarette. Every day, they put electricity on some parts of my body, as they tried to make me go to another religion [Islam).

"It was at that time, when the Lord gave me the vision to open up the media field and also start a TV station. That vision God gave me was to create a great platform using the media to reach a huge number of households all over the world."

I asked Joseph if it was an "audible voice" that he heard, and he replied, "No, it was a vision that I 'saw' in my mind, and it came at a time when I was feeling a lot of pain."

Joseph said that the prison guards who were torturing him, did so because they believed he had changed his religion from Muslim, to Christian, which he said "was not true."

"Actually, I was born a Christian, but because I have a heart for Muslims, they accused me converting from Islam," he said. "Still, I refused to deny Christ."

Eventually, Nasrallah was freed and was able to leave Egypt and moved to the United States in 2003, where he studied Media Arts and the Art of Theology in college. Then he started Media for Christ, a California-based non-profit organization in 2005, and it initially became a production house. After four years he had enough material and experience to start the broadcasting, he says.

In 2010 he launched "The Way TV" (a 24/7 Arabic channel ) to the Galaxy 19 satellite and it covered America, Canada and North Mexico, boasting a viewership of 12 million households, Then in 2011, he added more satellites and began to reach the Middle East and Europe which expanded "The Way TV" to another 60 Million households.

Nasrallah went on to say that with over 90% of the Arab world having access to television and large numbers of people who cannot read, the need for high quality Christian TV service is clear and claimed that their TV audience at approximately 40 million people.

Joseph Nasrallah"Viewers can watch a wide range of entertaining and informative television programs that are culturally sensitive and relevant," he said. "Our network of the channel and the website caters for Arabic and English speakers. We also recognize the importance of encouraging children and the needy people that lives in the poverty and we do special programs supporting them.

"Since our inception, our vision has been to see a growing Church in the Middle East, North Africa, America, and Canada that is confident in its Christian faith and witness, serving the community and contributing to the good of society and culture. We try to do this by providing the churches and Christians of the region with an opportunity to witness for Jesus Christ through inspirational, informative and educational television services.

"Right now, we have eighteen hours of Arabic, and the rest is in English," he said.

Nasrallah stated, "Our programming is family oriented, and we are also covering breaking news of whatever's going on in Egypt, like when they burn the churches, and when they kidnap young girls. So that's what we're putting out, the real picture; the real news that some people would like to hide.

"Actually part of 'The Way TV' is giving the people a good idea about how we can act as Christians in situations like this. When the Muslim Brotherhood had the power for one year, they were trying to tell the people in Egypt that we Christians, are 'not nice'.

"But the reality of what they were saying was not right, because they were calling everyone who was not Muslim, an 'infidel'. You have to share your message with Muslims with love, but also say that we all have the right to live 'good' like they claim, and we also should have the right to worship in church and pray and live peacefully. Don't put bombs in front of it," he said.

"During that year the Muslim Brotherhood were in power, we went through very severe pain. The Church, at that time, prayed, and prayed, and the Lord answered with a new revelation that they would fall, and we can now go back to a more civilized again way of running the country."

Do the evangelicals and the Copts [Egypt's indigenous Christians] now work together?

"We are now united like never before," said Joseph. "Before this, we were fighting each other, but now the Lord has allowed us to work together in real unity. Jesus Christ is the only Person that has to be glorified. We have one law, and one Biblical aspect that we all now follow."

I then asked Joseph how people could pray for him and his media ministry, and he replied, "Actually, our next step is going on the Dish Network so we can be visible by all Americans. This is a huge step on our ministry. We have been approved by Dish, and they are now asking for $200,000 right now. We have already done a lot of events to raise some of this money, and my prayer is for the Lord to send this provision so we are able to step onto the Dish Network which will mean another potential 20,000,000 viewers here in the United States of America."

Joseph concluded by saying, "We are building a great platform to the real leaders and ministries that have a heart for the 'End Times Harvest.' That is what we are greatly looking forward to."
