Former "Superdrag" Band Member Who Turned to the Lord Says There's "no substitute to feeling the power of God changing you"

Prior to his meeting with the Holy Spirit in 2002, John Davis had the appearance of a successful career in the secular music realm. In terms of records and publicity, Davis was on top, appearing with the band Superdrag on Late Night, MTV and on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart.

But what clamoring fans couldn't see was the devastation the lifestyle and alcoholism was having on him. "I constantly had this ill-defined feeling. I could easily drink myself to stupidity. I was trying to fill a void that only God could," explained Davis, who began drinking to excess at age 19.

However one night 3 years ago while driving home to his parents, Davis was suddenly confronted by the Lord. "I remember driving and just crying out to God. I said, ‘Lord, I'm tired and need help.' I knew I was being convicted -- I didn't hear a voice or see a vision, I just knew God was dealing with me. I had no intention to change my life before that night. It was like going from zero to 60 mph in two seconds. The conviction just hit me."

Looking back, Davis calls it his "Damascus Road Experience." Though he hadn't been planning on changing his life, the Lord intervened and turned him around. He found once he gave his life to God, a "huge burden was lifted."

After spending a couple weeks in "detox" at his parents' house, Davis found that things looked very different. "Every chance I got my nose was in the Bible," he said. "I realized that there was no substitute to feeling the power of God changing you." It was the answer to his mother's many prayers for him.

He informed the band but knew he was obligated to fulfill his contract with them for another album and promotion. Davis left Superdrag after that. "I laid it all out for the group and they were supportive of me," he said. "They were concerned for my health. There was a lot of love. And then one other band member got sober. That's what caused a divide in the group."

Davis released his first solo effort on Rambler Records this year. The self-titled album documents his life change. Says Davis, "[God's] Word says He can move mountains, and He did move a mountain for me. If He does that for me, He can do it for anyone. He had wisdom and strength for me."
