President Trump Blocks US Chip Sale to Chinese-Owned Company

Exactly one week ago, we covered President Trump's reversal of a Biden-era ban on the sale of advanced chips to China. We warned that this decision would strengthen China and we prayed for the President to change course. And now, in the new year, the Lord has answered our prayers.

President Donald Trump issued an order on Jan. 2 canceling HieFo Corporation's acquisition of chips and wafer fabrication assets from Emcore Corp. in 2024, citing national security concerns.
The order prohibits Delaware-based HieFo, controlled by a Chinese citizen, from owning "the assets comprising the digital chips and related wafer design, fabrication, and processing businesses" acquired from New Jersey-based Emcore. The acquisition was completed on April 30, 2024.
The president said in the order that "there is credible evidence" that HieFo, through its acquisition of Emcore's assets, "might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States."
According to the Times, HieFo has 180 days to divest itself of the assets in question, unless the date is extended by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). This decision comes after CFIUS found that the transaction posed a national security risk. The committee feared that Emcore chips could be diverted from the US.
The Times also notes that this is not the first deal President Trump has blocked. He issued a similar order in July blocking Suirui International Co.'s acquisition of Delaware-based Jupiter Systems. In this case too CFIUS identified national security concerns, fearing Jupiter's products could be used "in military and critical infrastructure environments."
Though President Trump does not appear to have blocked the sale of Nvidia H200 chips to China we warned about, this story shows that he is taking deals like these very seriously. China would like nothing more than to surpass us in tech and AI, but President Trump seems determined to keep that from happening.
