The New York Post's Miranda Devine reported Wednesday that MAGA merchants, pro-life causes, religious organizations and conservative groups were among customers denied accounts or credit, citing findings from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
Among the examples highlighted by the Post: JPMorgan Chase's payment operation, WePay, closed an account belonging to a merchant selling Trump and Make America Great Again merchandise, claiming it "promote[d] hate, violence, or racial intolerance."
The review covered JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citibank, Wells Fargo, USBank, Capital One, PNC, TD Bank and BMO.
Federal examiners found all nine maintained policies between 2020 and September 2025 that could influence decisions to restrict services because of political beliefs, religious convictions or lawful business activities.
"Today's report provides irrefutable evidence that the nation's largest banks have denied, debanked and discriminated against customers and lawful businesses," Comptroller Jonathan Gould said in an agency statement.
Religious-liberty advocates said the findings vindicated concerns Christians have raised for years.
"No one should be denied access to basic financial services because of their political or religious beliefs," Alliance Defending Freedom senior counsel Jeremy Tedesco said in a statement.
The agency examined nearly 100,000 complaints and approximately 420,000 pages of bank documents. It found broad reputation policies lacked clear standards and objective criteria. Restrictions also affected firearms, energy and other lawful industries.
The findings were not confined to conservatives. The Wall Street Journal reported that an organization favoring Democratic candidates was also denied services.
JPMorgan said its policies prohibit political and religious discrimination. According to Reuters, a spokesperson blamed regulatory pressures, adding: "That system needs fixing."
Reuters reported the regulator imposed no penalties with Wednesday's findings. The OCC said it is considering further changes to prevent discrimination and curb subjective banking decisions.
For affected Americans, the consequences reach beyond politics: losing banking access can disrupt payroll, donations and ordinary business operations.
