Outrage Erupts in Spain as Socialists Move to Wipe Out Centuries-Old Christian Holiday

Christian traditions are rarely erased overnight. They are chipped away piece by piece. History has shown where that road can lead: When socialist and communist ideologies gain unchecked power, the Christian faith itself inevitably becomes a target.

(Andalusia, Spain) — [Charisma News] A centuries-old Christian tradition is at the center of a growing fight in Spain after socialist officials voted to separate a small town's annual holiday from the Catholic celebrations that gave birth to it. (Screengrab image: via Facebook video-Jaen)

For more than 400 years, Albanchez de Mágina, a town of roughly 900 residents in Andalusia, has celebrated Saint Francis of Paola with religious festivities in early May. May 4 has historically served as a local holiday tied to a solemn procession honoring the town's patron saint.

That will change in 2027.

Councilors from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, or PSOE, voted to move the May 4 holiday to April 30, separating the civic holiday from the traditional Christian festivities, according to Breitbart News.

Mario León, a local spokesperson for the center-right People's Party, called the decision "unilateral, authoritarian, and without consensus," accusing socialist leaders of "decoupling the festivities from the Christian faith and inventing a secular holiday weekend."

The change will also make May 4 a regular working day, potentially preventing workers and teachers from participating in the religious celebration.

"That is the day [May 4] that corresponds to it by history, tradition and faith," León said, calling for officials to restore the traditional holiday.

Residents are fighting back. A citizens group of approximately 350 members has reportedly formed to defend the town's traditions, while another group is preparing a motion seeking to overturn the change.

This battle over one Spanish town's calendar reflects a much larger ideological conflict. Socialism has repeatedly followed a path that pushes Christianity from public life, first treating faith as something to be separated from civic culture and eventually as something to be marginalized altogether.
