California Family Council Director Ejected from State Championship Track Meet for Peacefully Supporting Girls' Sports

The battle for girls' sports is ultimately a battle for truth itself. It's a fight for the principle that reality matters, that biological differences are meaningful, and that protecting our daughters' opportunities is worth more than political convenience. This is not merely about athletics—it's about whether we will maintain a society grounded in truth or surrender to the chaos of ideological confusion.

[CaliforniaFamily.org] Last Saturday at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Track and Field Championships in Clovis, California, we witnessed a deeply troubling assault on the freedom of speech that extends far beyond athletic competition. State officials from CIF kicked out California Family Council's Sophia Lorey even as AB Hernandez, a 16-year-old male, took first place in the girls' high jump and triple jump at the state championship. This injustice on the track demonstrated to thousands of witnesses precisely why concerned parents and advocates like Sophia are speaking out to defend girls' sports. (Image: Pexels)

The Silencing of Peaceful Advocacy

CIF officials ejected Sophia for passing out wristbands and flyers to spectators that highlight the new "XXonly.org" campaign and petition. What makes this incident particularly egregious is the stark double standard it reveals. Lorey told Fox News Digital that she had passed the messages out at previous events without any issues. Yet suddenly, when the national spotlight was the brightest and the stakes the highest, peaceful advocacy for girls' sports became grounds for removal.

The atmosphere at the championship had become increasingly controlled, with CIF organizers repeatedly ordering spectators not to make "disparaging comments" about any competitors, officials or other spectators on Saturday. This heavy-handed approach to silence the truth about biological reality reveals an institutional fear of their lies being exposed.

The Injustice Unfolding

CIF's woefully inadequate policy response to pressure from grassroots activists and the Trump Administration was telling. State officials made a series of sweeping rule changes in the days leading up to the event to ensure female athletes who finished behind a male in their competition would be given a medal based on where they placed among their fellow female competitors. This bureaucratic band-aid acknowledges the fundamental unfairness while refusing to address its root cause.

The painful reality was captured on the podium: during the medal ceremonies for the three events, the female competitors who finished one spot behind Hernandez had to stand next to the male athlete. These young women, who had trained for years and deserved recognition for their authentic achievements, were forced into a charade that diminished their accomplishments.

Biblical Truth Under Attack

Scripture teaches us that "God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God  He  created them; male and female He created them" (Genesis 1:27). This fundamental truth cannot be legislated away or silenced by stadium security. When we abandon this Biblical understanding of human identity, we don't just lose athletic competitions—we lose our moral compass entirely.

The aggressive suppression of voices like Sophia's reveals the desperation of those who know their position cannot withstand honest scrutiny. Truth has a way of exposing falsehood, which is precisely why those promoting gender ideology work so hard to silence dissenting voices rather than engaging in open dialogue.

A Pattern of Violence and Intimidation

The weekend's events revealed the stark contrast between peaceful conservative advocacy and aggressive LGBTQ activism. The day before Sophia was removed for distributing wristbands, a trans-radical activist attacked a conservative influencer outside the event with a flagpole. The attacker was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, obstructing a public officer, and vandalism, according to police records obtained by Fox News Digital.

This violence occurred even as Clovis Police Sgt. Chris Hutchison told Fox News Digital that their "stance is always to allow people to exercise their constitutional right to free speech and protest. They have a right to do it in a manner that isn't inciting violence or causing other problems." Yet despite this stated commitment to free speech, Sophia was still escorted out of the event.

Federal Response and State Defiance

This controversy unfolded against the backdrop of mounting federal pressure. President Donald Trump singled out Governor Gavin Newsom in a Truth Social post on Tuesday when he threatened to cut funding to the state if a trans-identifying athlete was allowed to compete in the girls' competition this weekend. But California continues to blatantly ignore the clear meaning of Title IX. CIF instead simply instituted the "pilot program" to accommodate other female athletes.

The federal response has been swift and decisive. The US Department of Justice announced an investigation into the state over the issue on Wednesday, and the US Department of Education has been investigating the state over the issue since February. This represents exactly the kind of federal leadership needed to protect the rights of all women and girls.

One particularly noteworthy highlight is Governor Newsom's documented hypocrisy on this issue. Newsom has been the subject of frequent local and national criticism throughout the track and field postseason for enabling the trans-identifying athlete to compete, despite previously admitting on his podcast that he believes males competing in girls' sports is "deeply unfair."

A National Crisis

California is not alone in this assault on girls' sports. This very same weekend, trans-identifying athletes competed and won state competitions in Maine, Washington, Oregon and Minnesota. This represents a coordinated abandonment of biological reality across multiple states, despite President Trump's "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports" executive order signed on February 5.

A Call to Courageous Action

Sophia's peaceful witness at the state championships reflects the same courage displayed by countless Biblical figures who refused to bow to cultural pressure. Like Daniel's friends who would not worship the golden image, or like Esther who risked everything to speak truth to power, Sophia chose to stand for what is right even when doing so invited persecution.

Her ejection from the stadium sends a clear message: California's educational and political establishment has chosen sides, and it's not with parents, biological reality, or constitutional rights. Instead, they have embraced the cult of gender ideology over protecting our daughters' opportunities and safety.

Moving Forward in Faith

As followers of Christ, we are called to "speak the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15) especially when that truth is unwelcome. Sophia's peaceful witness reminds us that standing for Biblical truth often requires personal sacrifice.

California Family Council will continue standing for every parent who believes our daughters deserve better. We will not be silenced, we will not be intimidated, and we will not surrender the truth that God has written into the very fabric of creation.
