[] Family Research Council President Tony Perkins told The Todd Starnes Show on NEWSMAX last week that he's "optimistic" House Republicans will collaborate on congressional funding in the new year in part due to Speaker Mike Johnson's leadership. (Screengrab image)

Perkins, a Baptist pastor, conservative advocate, and frequent media commentator, said he had a "lengthy conversation" with the Speaker recently and believes Johnson is listening "more than any other Speaker we've had in modern time."

"He went around the conference and said ‘Hey, what do you think is the best way forward?' He listened to everyone," Perkins said of Johnson, also weighing in on the Speaker's faith. Johnson points to the Christian Bible as his worldview, Perkins noted.

"That's actually the worldview that this country was established on ... that has been the predominant mindset of those that have led our country up until ... 50 or 60 years ago," Perkins told Starnes.

Perkins, a former Louisiana state representative, previously chaired the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, a bipartisan federal government entity that weighs in on faith-related policies around the world.

"People are afraid to be attacked by the media, but not Mike ... he's very comfortable in his skin," Perkins told Starnes.

As host of the daily Washington Watch program, Perkins "covers the issues of faith, family and freedom ... what is really happening in our nation's Capital," according to American Family Radio.

"As a Christian, the first thing is we need to be praying for our country," he said.

"When you push God, morality out of the public square, when there's no longer right or wrong, you can define your own existence, your own gender. Something's going to fill the void," he told Starnes, adding that the world has witnessed an uptick of intolerance against particular religions amid hostility in the Middle East.

"We should not allow this hostility, this public hostility, to push us into the shadows or silence us." Subscribe for free to Breaking Christian News here
