"As Christian parents we have an obligation to help these two boys become men," he said, "and if we miss this opportunity, we may not get it again... What Mike has done is take the faith of a child and out of that, he's becoming a man."
(Van Buren, Arkansas)—Writing for Everyday Christian, reporter Peter Elliott details the moving story of 15-year-old Mike Durbin Jr.'s 500-mile trek from Whitehouse, Texas, to Springfield, Missouri, to "make Jesus famous."
The idea for the trek came to Mike Jr. after an "extensive dream" he had following a youth conference. The clincher is, Mike Jr. has battled acute lymphoblastic leukemia since he was 5-years old.
At first, Mike's father agreed to drive his son through the region he felt he was supposed to cover, but Mike Jr. would have none of it. It was supposed to be a sacrifice on his part, he said.
Mike Sr. calls the trek a "rite of passage" for his son. "As Christian parents we have an obligation to help these two boys become men," he said, "and if we miss this opportunity, we may not get it again... What Mike has done is take the faith of a child and out of that, he's becoming a man."
"We've seen God's hand all through this," he added. "We have been rejected a few places and then felt led to come back a second time and we've been accepted."
